J Herbin 1670 Stormy Grey Ink Review

Hello all!

This is my first ink review, so I hope you'll pardon me if this is not up to standard! ><

Now for some background. I fell in love with this ink once I saw it a few months back. I decided there and then that I would be getting this ink once it came out! Our local dealer said it would be coming in October, and I reserved a bottle. Fast forward a few months later. I got a call from our dealer today, and there I went, to get this ink.

And look at how pretty it is! I am in love

First, the exterior packaging.

All that gold!!! <3

To the actual review!

And finally, closeups of the gold!

I hope you've enjoyed my little review! Have a great day everyone!

EDIT: I realised this should be under Ink Reviews. Could I trouble a mod to move it please? Thank you! ^^

~Epic

And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

Got my bottle yesterday. Inked up a twsbi 580 def looks cool all that glitter once it settles out. make sure you shake bottle well to get the gold dispersed because it settles very quick. like everyone else states this is a real cool ink and looks great with all that glitter but....upon uncapping my pen this morning I had to pull the nib and clean all the caked up gold which had clogged everything up. I'd just make sure what ever you ink up you can pull the nib and feed easily.

Thanks for the review. It'd be interesting to see a writing sample after the pen has been unused for a while to see if there is big difference if used without being shaken in the pen. I really liked the sneak peak that was released here before it became available in the U.S. I figured I'd wait to see more reviews and it's just as well because it sold out the first day it was available at Goulet.

I believe there is going to be a significant difference, since all the gold will sink to the bottom. More concentrated gold :puddle:

Thing is, it settles real quickly heh.. need to keep shaking the pen!

Yes, I'd think so. I just wonder how long it would take to settle out. 10 minutes, an hour? Even without the gold, it does look like a very intriguing grey. But then, of course, it'd be an awfully expensive grey!

Oh. My. Gosh!!! I love this ink! You've got me hooked, LE :P PS: lovin' the gold :D

Thanks! :D

Oh, this ink is selling like hot cakes! If you have a chance of getting one bottle from the first batch, please do! It wouldn't be until December before a second batch is ready, so I heard!

I've been enjoying this ink. Inked up a TWSBI 580 Broad nib; I figure it will be harder to get clogged up and hopefully easier to clear/clean if it does!

If I have a pause in my writing, the first few words come out with heavy gold and it settles down pretty quickly. In lower light, it's easy to miss the gold, but it's there if you look for it.

I will say, don't leave a pen nib-down overnight! I did and enough gold particles settled down to clog the nib. I didn't need to work too hard to clear it up though. Forced a bit of ink though (enough to make a single gold infused drop) and a tiny drop of water on the nib got it back to flowing. After the first bit of "I'm writing with liquid gold" cleared out, then pen behaved fine. Even after letting it sit (tilted slightly nib up!) for a few hours, it started up without a problem. I find that to be most impressive, really.

As for shaking a pen before use, I've found that instead of twisting the cap off the pen, rotating the body of the pen out of the cap is enough to get the settled out gold back in action.

Sadly, I can't rotate my pen... it has a magnetic cap... what I do is I roll the pen, or shake it.

Wow, that's quick! Thanks for letting us know.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
