I was following that auction and didn't end up bidding at all. The price went up fast at the end.

MB should make an H.G. Wells WE Demonstrator. Judging from this sale, any MB demo would be a quick seller.

I was in that auction until the last few minutes when the price shot up to more than I thought it was worth. These are fairly rare, but not impossible to find. Bonham's had one a year or so ago for around $750 and it was unused. Hopefully one will be mine someday.

One odd thing I noticed was the last bid was retracted right before the end.

I was also following this auction. It went too high for me considering the overall condition of the pen. If it was pristine then I could see it fetching this price.

That looks highly suspicious. That bidder bid many times, but retracted his last bid of $1225 that presumably was winning the auction over the $1200 bid already placed. I would be reporting this if I was that bidder who had been landed with it for the next bid down.

wow ... what an auction!!

One thing in this auction is surprising ... the 70ties demo pens had special nibs, i.e. these were not gold nibs but gold plated steel nibs without a slit and without iridium point, thus, it is impossible to write with these pens in the original state ... someone must have changed the nibs (which is very easy)

I have a similar demo in my collection ... I never thought that prices for these pens would be sooo high ... hmm ... I would sell my (unused) demo for a much lower price :)

Is there a process for reporting suspicious/inappropriate bidding on eBay? The bid retraction seems as if the bidder wanted to run up the price of the pen rather than actually buy it. If this person had not bid in such a manner, the price for the pen (without additional bidders) would have been under $500. After running up the price so high and then retracting the bid, it seems as if this was the goal -- raising the price without buying -- which is unfair to the person who, in the end, must pay the inflated price.

Yes. Go to the original listing page. On some sites it's different to others when an item has ended.

Press 'Report item' button. Select Report Category: Listing Practices, then Reason for Report: Fraudulent listing activities, then Detailed Reason: Seller is using other accounts to inflate item price.

Oh, that's interesting - I would be surprised, if ebay would even answer you. Think about it: the higher the price goes, the higher the fee goes, that you have to pay to ebay. So what is the result? Ebay earns more money...

He did it the same way with a Titanium Pilot - in this case the pusher was more intelligent, he used an account in private mode.

Rumor has it that you can actually "order" that kind of service to make everybody happy... except the buyer... (ebay earns a higher fee - the seller gets more money - the service company gets a percentage of the amount of the higher price...).

There are no facts, there is no truth - just a data to be manipulated...

I was also following this one. Check out the bidder-in-question's profile, 17% of his bids in the last 30 days are with the same seller AND he has 7 retractions! Definitely looks suspicious to me.

They never answer. However, they do often take action. Especially against shill bidding. This is as clear a case as you could get, so they are very likely to act on a report here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
