Paper Checking 2

Recommended Posts

Hello!!

You may have lost my first post because I misplaced it unter the General Paper & Pen Paraphernalia group, so here's the link: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/268141-paper-checking-1/

Ok, for those of you who don't know me, I am a bookbinder looking for a good paper to use in her journals. These are the foutain pens, quills and inks I used for the tests:

For this post I will be checking the following paper: Canson Draft 90 g.

The paper had some texture, but not much. The color was ivory. The paper was smooth with all the fountain pens and quills I used and it did not broaden the line. I would say the drying time is short.

You can see with the Sailor Grenade that the shading was great and there was no feathering at all in any case.

That is the reverse, where you can see there is no bleed-through, even thought the calligraphy quill uses a lot of ink.

Overall, I would say it is a great, great paper.

Score: 10

I am here because I enjoy working with paper, but I honestly know little about fountain pens. For this reason, if there is anything else I should be adding or something doesn't seem right about this paper, I would appreciate if you let me know. I am very interested in hearing what you have to say :).

Have a wonderful day!!

You may want to check for sheen. (See some of the sheen threads)

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

So, that should say that I report back on feathering, show through, bleed through, and shading. Some papers just show off sheen and shading better than others. I have difficulty seeing sheen. Alas, I love papers that let me use my UV inks. Not all papers will react well with the UV inks. Even still it's hard to say which ones will. Alas, that requirement is something that I seem to be the only person interested in seeing.

For example, QSH, Lux Blue, Ghost Blue all show up under black light ... BUT not all papers are UV friendly.

Oh, but I don't have a UV ink, so I can't test this characteristic on paper :(

But it's always interesting to learn this type of ink exists ^^

Before you decide that you don't have a UV ink, shine a light on your current inks. Also, look at your highlighters. I know that many of us use highlighters even over our FP ink.

Thank you for the suggestion, it's a very interesting thing to test.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
