Noodler's Apache Sunset

Recommended Posts

Nipu raved about this ink, so I decided to fill my hardworking Miss Swan with the sample of Apache Sunset I got from Pear Tree Pen Co.

paper: Clairefontaine

pen: Mabie Todd 'Swan' no. 2 Binderized super needlepoint flex

The actual writing is only about three inches wide again. I blew it up for better visibility. cool.gif

Here's an especially zoomed up image of the shading, as suggested by Jared.

I love this ink -- such great shading. Didn't think I'd use it often, but it's loaded all the time. What a treat to see sample writing with it from the hands of a flex master!

Don't I wish I were! I have plenty of room to grow.

Here's how the ink looks on cardboard. (I did this 'cause Lie de The looked pretty cool on postcard) The shading disappears and the ink becomes a gentle color overall. :

This ink reminds me of soft-boiled eggs. (esp. Japanese ones, since the yolks are more orange)

Wow! Simply beautiful, Hana! drool.gif

And what a timely review for me - I'm considering either Sunset, Cayenne or Habanero for the Mrs, since she finally found a pen of mine that she likes. animal26.gif I'm so glad I didn't give up on her. laugh.gif

Right, I'm off to see if there any other reviews of those inks.

Great work, Hana. cool.gif

I absolutely love Apache Sunset. (I love it more in Hana's handwriting than in mine, but that's ok.) The shading makes me happy every time I use it.

I never would have thought an orange ink could be subtle.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

Oh yeah. Apache Sunset was already near the top of my list because I Iove inks with a lot of depth. I have a 1:10 mix of Noodlers Black and Noodlers Golden Brown and it's very good. But in pics I've seen, Apache Sunset has more depth than any ink I've ever seen, and your post proves it. WOW. I love it. My daughter's gonna go crazy when she sees this post.

Two things:

1: beautiful ink; I think that I must have some.

2: beautiful handwriting; I wish I could have some.

Really, Hana, absolutely gorgeous; I am very jealous. Unfortunately, my years upon years of class-note-taking, where my only concern was speed and not beauty (or even legibility, to anyone but myself) has taken its toll. sad.gif

Well, that cinches it. Apache Sunset just moved to the head of my Must Have List. Thanks so much for the review. Very timely indeed. smile.gif

Thanks for the great review and simply fabulous handwriting! One of these days... maybe... if I keep practicing... wink.gif

Either way, I think there's anoher ink that I might just have to try blush.gif

All the best,

Mike

Flow good, ooze bad!

Lovely Hana, thank you again for sharing! This is making me want to send you my inks to have you sample them for us.

As I am also looking towards a similar nib, I wonder about the level of flexibility of your Swan #2--moderately flexible, or more wet noodleish?

Thanks again for the close-up to show the shading. Very nicely done.

Really, Hana, somebody ought to pay you to advertize their inks for them. Everytime I see your beautiful script, it makes me want to buy the ink. I see that I'm not alone in that thought.

It reminds me of iodine! laugh.gif

Lovely handwriting, Hana, really inspirational.... smile.gif

I have a bottle of Apache Sunset and it is certainly a unique colour in my small ink stable.

Grasshopper, it's funny that you should mention Habanero and Cayenne as other potential purchases (in addition to the Sunset); I had originally ordered Noodler's Cayenne from a Canadian ink seller but there was a potential delay, so I was offered the Sunset as an alternative. I know Wim did a really great ink review of the Cayenne (and that's what inspired my first choice) but I am very happy with the Sunset. If I go to the Portland Pen show this summer, I'll buy some Cayenne!

Thank you all for the generous comments! blush.gif You are all so kind..!

rbbrock-- You should have seen my handwriting a year ago. Vastly different--! And a few years before that, you wouldn't even think it was written by the same person. I can change the whole structure of my writing with relative ease (for example, changing curvy capital "M" to pointy capital "M", or switching the lengths of the ascender/descender of the letter "f").

Emil-- Who is that on your avatar?

Jared-- I wouldn't call her a wet-noodle, but she definitely is a wonderful vintage flex. Maybe my standards of wet-noodles are different since I got started on copperplate with dip pens..

Hana,

Please tell us how you learned your style of writing, and more importantly for us, how can we learn to do the same?

I enjoy dip nibs, but am discouraged by how scratchy they can be. How does your super needlepoint compare to dip nibs?

Thanks,

Jared

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
