Graf Von Faber-Castell Garnet Red

Wow, that took ages - in a double sense!

It took ages to take an accurate photo. The scanner didn't capture the brown undertones and the camera was only a bit better. These are the disadvantages of having a freshly calibrated monitor - you just can't ignore the colours being off.

It also took ages getting to like the colour. I was disappointed at the beginning, but now I really like this ink a lot. It just wasn't what I expected it to be.

Graf von Faber-Castell Garnet Red is a good ink in general. But if you have to write on bad paper as often as I do, it's a blessing. Even with a wet flex nib on copy paper, I could hardly see any feathering.

The colour of the writing is - at least on my calibrated monitor - very accurate.

Here's a detail. Not because it's helpful. Just because I've just made a macro lens for my cell phone camera and wanted to test it ;)

Nice review and pictures . The color changes drastically with with bold nibs , best in medium lines , shading excellent , works best in mediumish broads , best demonstrated in smple with hero 395 . looks closer to diamine oxblood , according to your scans , no personal experiance . it is desirable to compare the prices of compared brands as well IMHOP

Yes, it's closer to Oxblood than I thought it would be. I expected Leonardo to be closer because of the brown undertones that, BTW, look a bit like Waterman Brun Absolu.

Your wish is my command:

GvFC Garnet Red: 25.00€/75ml=0.33€/ml

Montblanc Leonardo: 13.00€/30ml=0.43€/ml

Diamine Oxblood: 4.50€/30ml=0.15€/ml (0.12€/ml in bigger bottles)

Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock: 14.95€/35ml=0.43€/ml

Which shades more, Faber Castell Garnet or Pelikan Garnet?

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I just got my hands on this yesterday and Whoa!.. It came out almost identical to MB Bordeaux :(

I love the MB Bordeaux (Burgundy Red) but didnt need spend so much on something I already had plenty of.

Having finally put Edelstein Garnet and F-C Garnet on 4 papers with 2 pens for Edelstein and 3 pens for F-C.

F-C shades more.

I saw Edelstein as too red-ruby, and F-C more a sepia.

As soon as I learn how to use a scanner I'll put up my results.

The colors I see from my scan are not very true.

I'd tried a scanner back in the dark ages when one had a green screen. Didn't work.

Now I have instructions that don't instruct, and ...ah...one pushs the buttons, that's why there is no dial. Yep, Scanners for Dummies is on my buy list.

GFC garnet the more I use it, the more I like it. It shades well.

As I said, it's not for me, reddish enough to be garnet, in I have Bohemian garnet in mind. I have a very nice 400n's semi-flex B on a 605.

Using it on Clairefontaene Veloute 90g...even though not sepia, being a bit too red for that...but it reminds me of sepia.

Factoring in the cost, it gets on my ink wish list, but not at the top. It appears an ink well worth having.

Thank you for the review. I thought it would be redder. It reminds me of a black red.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thank-you for the excellent review. I also thought that this was similar to Diamine Oxblood, except I'd say that the colour dries to a rather velvety shade (which Is probably of little importance when writing). I like it a lot, although I concur it's not exactly a traditional bright 'garnet' shade like the Pelikan ink of the same name, it's rich tones do suggest the darker stones in that family. I also find it much less 'red' than the Mont Blanc Burgundy.....here is THE tree:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
