Caran D'ache Chromatics: Ultra Violet

cybaea

Recommended Posts

I am finding myself warming to this ink from the new 'Chromatics' series. I am not a big user of violet, but there is some versatility here that I find useful and a depth to the colour that does not show up on the scan.

Suggested usage

DAILY WRITER: Very possible.

BUSINESS: Hmmm, I normally have a strict 'no violet at work' policy, at least for men, but I am actually considering this one: from a wet pen it is very dark and would not be completely out of place for business communication and from a dry pen (perhaps slightly diluted) it might be pressed into service for marking edits.

NOTES AND JOURNALS: Yes, very much so.

INFORMAL LETTERS: Oh yes, so very much. Please send me some with this.

FORMAL LETTERS: Unlikely.

LOVE LETTERS: In diluted form - probably. Undiluted? Not sure: what do you think?

Review

Note that the soak test is on a random slip of office paper, not Rhodia, and notice the darker colour on the more absorbent papers. The two lines under the 'ultra violet' heading are one and two passes, respectively.

What do you think? Would you use it in the office? For a love letter?

I'd certainly use that at work. I don't see why gender should have a bearing on the ink colour someone chooses, either. It's not as though contact between ink and testosterone would cause some hideous chemical reaction!

It reminds me of Private Reserve's Ebony Purple, when that's very slightly diluted. A very black-toned purple.

I like the look of this ink a lot. to me, reminiscent of Diamine Amazing Amethyst, which I lave and use periodically.

Would *I* like to get a love letter written in this? Heck yeah.

Of course, given my husband's completely illegible chicken scratch scrawl I wouldn't be able to read it....

Thanks for the review (oh great -- another *expensive* ink for me to want to try... :wallbash:).

Nice review. This ink appeals to me a lot, too. Somehow reminds me of slate. No, not the type of thing made to write on with chalk but the roof material of older buildings...

This looks similar to Caran d'Ache "Storm" and J. Herbin "Poussière de Lune". Anyone able to do a side-by-side?

Wow is this stuff expensive: http://www.inknouveau.com/2013/02/caran-dache-inks-out-with-old-in-with.html

I like it, but I don't think I could bring myself to pay that much for a bottle, particularly since to my eye it doesn't look that different from Storm, which is about half the price (and even half the price is still pretty pricey).

Though, now that I read that article again, it sounds to me like these are replacing Colors of the Earth. :(

I only have the J Herbin:

Hope this helps.

Thanks, cybaea! The Caran d'Ache looks a tad more solid and saturated than the Herbin.

Looks just like CdA Storm to me. Which was expensive enough, I must say.

Thanks for showing us!

It reminds me of the Kobe ink - Ilke it. It's a little gray for my tastes, but I think it's really pretty.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have this ink as well, and I am very fond of it, though I wish it had just a bit more blue in it.

I take it back, it's not like Tanum Purple.

However, it is like #15 Akkerman Voorhout Violet, although VV is darker.

Is it as dry as Scabiosa?

I tried - and liked - a sample of this one but ultimately ended up skipping it and ordering two other CD'A bottles. Perfectly lovely, but too close to another favorite ink.

I received two bottles last week, and really like it :)

It's more saturated than either Scabiosa or Poussiere de Lune, and on a par with PdL for flow/lubrication.

So I bought a bottle of this a few months ago... liked it but didn't love it....took a very satisfying detour through a bunch of teals but suspect I will be inking something with itt soon. The most recent comments are over 3 years old. Anyone have any more recent opinions?

I do not have this ink, but I've read that it looks and behaves like Kaweco Summer Purple. Maybe someone who has both could provide a comparison.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
