Broken Carene Nib

balanemate

Recommended Posts

Damn it, after near two ears of daily use my Carene decided to break.

I have no idea how this could happen - one moment i saw a thin crack on the nib, next one the nib is almost split in two parts :(

Hope it is still under warranty conditions...

Hi, I don't know about the waranty. Looks the pen met with something unforgiving....

But anyway, you could order a replacement section for it. A good Waterman dealer can order one, and you can order them online as well.

I'd start with pursing the warranty. Force has seen the inside of a couple of Carene sections, and may be able to comment on whether there's some portion of the interior anatomy that results in a thinning of the walls at that point.

You don't bite the top of the pen do you? Just out of curiosity, I used to destroy a couple pilots this way, but I'd suspect in this case that you wouldn't :D :) (the 18k Gold nib would probobly leave an odd taste in your tonsel! :)

Its probobly a material that had constant pressure where pressure usually isn't exerted.

nah, i do not bite my pens :)

and my first idea was about pressure, but if so there would be crack at bottom of nib, not top.

At or about that location is where the cap touches the grip. Inside is threaded portion that accepts the hardware. So, it is failry thin at that section. My thoughts are that the capped pen has taken a side load at some point, thus snapping the grip. With a 3 year warranty you should be able to get it replaced. They will no doubt keep the damaged parts unless you clearly specify they are to be returned for sentimental reasons.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
