De Atramentis Oriental Red

I saw this ink in the requested thread, so here's a quick review of that Oriental Red.

This isn't a red that's going to make it into my regular rotation. It's just a little too bland for my tastes. It actually looks a bit brighter in theses photos, but it looks about like the color of an old red barn's faded paint. It's well-behaved, and a little bit dry.

Here's the link to the review on my blog. I have a longer review there as well as a bit of video.

Giggle -- red ink being bland. :)

Thank you for the review. I admit I wasn't a huge DA fan at first. I thought the inks were sort of bland and not very water resistant.

Now, given my inky proclivities, you know that left to my own devices, I usually choose a high maintenance ink.

However, after several years of use, however, I can tell you that bland is not a bad thing:

  • Sure, the DA inks don't require flushing every use (and let's get real, I usually choose an ink that needs to be flushed mid-fill);
  • Not once has a DA ink ever clogged my pen (boring);
  • The bottle doesn't generally tip over and spill over my clothes (once again, bland); and
  • The colors do not sear my retinas.

On the bright side, the ink is wonderful to use in drawings as it washes like a dream.

Most importantly, the DA inks hold up to the sunlight.

Don't discard this ink, come back to it and see if you like it.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The "bland" comment was really about the color. It's just not all that great, if you ask me. I have a lot of red inks, and this one doesn't stand out.

It's interesting that you've never had a DA ink clog on you. Whenever I get a DA ink I think "great, here comes the funk." I usually like their inks, but if I leave them in my pens they kinda dry up into a lumpy funk on my nib or under it around the feed. It's not enough to keep me from using them, but they do seem to do that a lot.

I agree with you on this color. I've recently tried quite a few De Atramentis inks, and found they have a few reds I really enjoy, but this isn't one of them. Cherry (despite the scent), Rose, and Kermesin are the stand-outs to me. All of which have good water resistance if you're into that. Oriental isn't bad, just kind of... plain.

I was giggling because it seems that red is by it's nature not a "bland" color - though I can understand that this shade of red is bland compared to other shades of red. Keep in mind that I bought QSH the instant I knew it was available and that ink is anything other than bland. Yet, I don't use QSH in my daily line up because of how fussy it is. Now, given that I know my preference is for fussy inks, it's possible that DA inks are fussy and I just don't know it because I expect my inks to be difficult.

Thanks for looking at that list. Since there was no review for Arthur Conan Doyle, which is Oriental Red according to DA, your review helps me see what AC Doyle would look like.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
