Here is another shot at a review. I hope I am getting better

Montblanc 149 1959 celluloid with telescoping piston

I have been incredibly lucky with my recent pen acquisitions. The pen I am about to review is easily the nicest vintage pen I have ever seen. It literally looks brand new. I really got lucky with this one. And to top it off it was an eBay buy

To the review

First impressions: When I first opened the box this pen was packaged in I knew right away I had something very special. The pen looks brand new. This is my second 50's 149 so I knew what to expect. The 50's 149 is a big pen but not quite as big as its younger brothers. I believe around 1960 the 149 started to grow. Even though I was expecting a lot, the condition of this pen blew me away, so my score is. 10/10

Fit and Finish: Every 149 I have ever had a chance to examine has been remarkable. These pens are built incredibly well. My particular pen is flawless.. Everything is tight, clean and Well fit I can not find a single fault in its design . ( and I have really tried to find faults for this review.). The pen is perfect. The craftsmanship at work here is remarkable. Score. 10/10

Design: I love the cigar shape. The design is almost perfect. The reason I say almost is because there is a design I actually like better, the flat top design of the 139. I can not fault the 149's design at all except to say there is one I like a hair better. It feels so wonderful in the hand. It's perfectly balanced. I can write forever with no hint of discomfort Score 9/10

Nib: Oh man.. My pen has a tri tone 18c nib. Its a semi flex medium and I LOVE IT. This is easily my second favorite nib I have ever written with. (My danitrio is #1). But this nib is so good it does it a disservice to drop it to a 9 just because I have one other that's better. The nib has the perfect amount of feedback. It puts down a lusciously wet line. I love it !!! These vintage mb nibs really live up to the hype. This 149 is a supreme writer. Score. 10/10

Filling system: Piston filler with a telescoping mechanism. I love this filling system. By far my favorite piston filler.. Very fun to use. Anyone who appreciates a piston filler really needs to try a MB with a telescoping piston. This would easily get a 10 if I didn't feel eye droppers ( especially the danitrio) were better. Score 9/10

Final score 48/50. Even though the 149 does not get my highest score it is my favorite This might be the only pen which I really think is a must own.

Price. I paid 1800.00 for this pen and I feel I got a tremendous deal.

Alternatively: use the upload tab when posting. There's no limit and Wim posted a tutorial next to it how it's done. Works perfectly.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
