Bethge #11

I typically hate inks with low saturation. It's not that they're bad, I just prefer inks with a high saturation. I really like the colours to pop off the page.

Which is why I was surprised at how much I like this ink. It was loaned to my by Seville at the last FPN meet-up, with the understanding that I'd give it back to him at the next Cambridge meet I go to (see you guys in December!).

I will not deny that this ink dries a tad ashy, but it still has a colour that is quite appealing. And the shading!

It behaves perfectly on CF & Rhodia paper ...

And just generally kind of rocks. Although the next picture indicates I had a Bethge #11 that I gave up, that isn't true. I did have several of the blues and aqua's, which were both ashy AND had low shading (if I recall correctly), so I ended up giving them away. But this ink I think I'm going to try and find a bottle of.

As usual, more images in my ink review album on Photobucket.

Ahhh the only other person I know besides me to use them. I don't know, but at one time I had 5 or 6 bottles of them. Really cool inks that are made for Bethge by J Herbin. I always heard some of Omas and even others were made by Herbin. Only one person I ever knew in the US carried them , Bethge, and she closed up. I like them better than Herbin to some extent as the colors were custom and slightly more saturated than Herbin's own line. Great to see, and wish I could get them in the US.

Looks pretty similar to Herbin Bouquet D'antan... have you used that one, and can you compare your experiences?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
