Katia, I look forward to seeing you again, hopefully you will bring the work that you have been doing since I last saw you!

Just in case you decide to pop down to Portobello Road again [like you did last time] I will not be there on the weekend of the 28th/29th February, as I will be attending the Little Rock Pen Show, in Arkansas, USA. I just thought that I had better mention it, otherwise it would be a shame if you came all the way by train, and I was not there! :(

I look forward to seeing you again.

Truffle Finder. :)

Having done the weekly shopping trip, I got back, and packed up a small parcel to go off to Neal, for some photographs to be done.

Hopefully a few images will be appearing on this thread fairly shortly.

The lovely Vanness Pen people in Little Rock are sponsoring a "Trunk Show" for the Truffle once again. Last year it was quite fun!

Albinoni,

I use Bock nibs in my pens, originally, when I first started doing my overlaid pens, Conway Stewart used to make the 'base-pens' for me, and I used to use their 'branded nibs', which were also made by Bock!

Thank you very much for your comment about my pens.

Henry is posing in his Speedo trunks in the USA at some point I have heard........

So I have been reliably informed, the Little Rock area is currently experiencing quite heavy snowfall! So I think that it will be very unlikely that I will be showing off my undergarments, while I am there!

I hope that this will not discourage anyone from coming to see what's going on at the Vaness shop though!!!

While it will be a balmy 72F today in Florida. This is the time of year we get to sneer at everyone who made fun of our 100F summers. :bunny01:

Keep that in mind planning next year's walkabout. :eureka:

Here you go folks, Henry's bespoke Namiki inspired commission in the sheet silver stage. Look at the number of cut-outs!

You're darned tooten' Ghost Plane! And it's going to be more complex than that even!

After it has been curled, and then silver soldered, the base-pens will be made up to fit the overlays perfectly. Then the magic will begin, whereby all the little spaces in the design will be 'in-filled' with different coloured Japanese laquer. [i don't think I have spelt that word correctly!]

Before I started doing the piercing out, I counted the number of 'holes' in one of the flowers in the design, there were over 50 of the little suckers!!!   :excl:

Hey hoo!!!

Excellent work, Truffle Finder, I am most impressed!! And (at the risk of revealing who it was that commissioned these from you!) I see that you've found a way to incorporate the four-leaf clovers into the design! Otherwise they would have been 'floating' and not a part of the template - kudos for that!

I will keep one of the pens as a 'Henry Simpole Overlay' pen. The second will be infilled with Japanese lacquer (correct spelling!) - black base, and red, vermillion, green and gold for the flowers. It will be a modern rendition of a vintage Dunhill Namiki design!

Great stuff Henry!

Thank you esterbex, truly drool-worthy!

The more I look at what Henry has done, the more I'm impressed. I thought I would share with our fellow FPNers the starting point Henry had to work with. Here are pics of my ultra-low-tech attempt at photo-montages of the design on the vintage Dunhill Namiki pen cap and barrel. This is what Henry had to work with – he’s managed to reproduce the design so faithfully!

The cap:

And the barrel:

I'm especially happy about the five-leaf clovers, which we thought we would have to lose! An interesting project, don't you think?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
