Montblanc Thomas Mann - Review

The very last WE, its complete ladies and gentleman.

That's WE number 18 and I am pretty sure it will be the last one until WE for 2010.

I really want to say this is a beautiful pen but no it is more then that, its a classic pen. In my view this is a pen that will never loose its charm.

With a black resin body and platinum trim this is a pen that grabs you immediately

The platinum lines go up and down the body and cap perfectly aligning when you close the pen.

Continuing with the classic theme this pen (like so many other WE's) is based its design on the 1920 domed shape Montblanc pens and its my favorite shape on these pens, it simply look right (did I say classic ?).

The clip is rather simple looking but has a black stone at its end. Thank god they chose a black stone and not another colour or else it will turn this unique pen into a tacky one.

This is a pen made of metal so its not as light as a resin made pen but it is also not very heavy so I rate it as a medium weight.

It sits comfortably in the hand well balanced with the weight directed toward the end of the pen like most WE's due to the brass piston.

Like all WE's (except the Kafka) this is a piston filler pen, its smooth to operate and hold ample amount of ink.

The nib is very attractive with a building etched on it, I only wish the nib would be a bit bigger so I would be able to see the details better.

I ordered this pen with a Fine nib and I am blown away of how nice it writes.

Yep this nib is in the same category as my Verne nib. Sooo smooth and so responsive. Oh dear I am going to have hard time putting this baby down back in the box.

Conclusion

This pen is right now in the stores and those who want a unique pen that both look amazing and write amazing then this pen is for you.

No its not cheap but for the price of Omas Paragon and Montegrappa Extra you can own a very good pen.

Tzutzik corner

He was sitting next to the door when the mailman arrived to deliver the pen.

He was licking his lips with anticipation when I opened the box and jumped on the pen the moment I had the pen in my hand.

He loves the pen!!!

Hi Amir,

Congrats and enjoy your new pen! My pen is still in transit somewhere and I have no idea when it will be making it's way home to me. I guess my review will have to wait! *Sigh :(

And mine's waiting for the broad batch to arrive. Went ahead and gave FPH my cc #. They're waiting on the bigger nibs as only the F and M shipped initially. Danged nib discrimination! Sigh...

I am quite sure the pen is coated in rich black lacquer (Chinese?) with platinum-plated inlays rather than just the normal black resin.

Tzutzik nuzzles all of your MBs! I might think Tzutzik is not very discerning but it seems to me that Tzutzik only bestows good favor on the very best of pens....and why not? After all only the best pens can make this cat purr! Nice pen! Nicer cat!

May you and those you love, be always blessed with peace and never ending joy.

Congratulations on this interesting new WE. The design is very formal and its good news that its not too heavy. Thanks for the first post of this new model.

Goodguy...

Great review, as usual. Thank you for sharing. Like you, I also obtained a TM with fine nib. I agree that it is an outstanding nib that really makes my handwriting look great (or at least better than usual :P ). I also agree with your assessment that it is a medium weight pen. One question I have for you - how have you found the experience of carrying the pen in a shirt pocket? I find it slightly heavy and have taken to carrying it clipped to my pants pocket.

Congratulations again on completing the quest.

nice pen :) is this pen 146 or 149 based?

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

146, I know you like bigger pens.

Never the less I think you should give it a look in a MB botique because I truely LOVE this pen and think you might still like it too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
