LMS 4-6-2 6229 Duchess of Hamilton got-up as 6220 Coronation

This picture shows 6229 ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ in the USA.

The locomotive was shipped to the USA for the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

The organisers had requested 6220 ‘Coronation’, but LMS sent ‘Duchess of Hamilton’ instead, albeit fitted with a different nameplate and number plates, to match those of the first member of the class.

LMS eventually decided to risk shipping the locomotive back to the UK in 1942, in spite of the U-Boat threat.

Note the addition of a headlamp and bell, to comply with the USA’s regulations for locomotives.
