I will be there, attended last year as well. North Carolina is a beautiful state with well designed and maintained highways, so getting there while a long drive was with minimal delays and no very bad traffic.

Guess I might should've posted a link for others interested in the details of scheduling & admission timing, so here:

http://www.trianglepenshow.com/

Save yourself looking into the listed hotel reserved block - I think they were gone 15 minutes after the announcement went up!

I'm planning on going Friday for morning admission. I missed last year's, due to moving residence & not finding out the schedule until the week following. [sound of grinding teeth]

This's my 1st posting of an event, so beg pardon if I'm missing something. Mainly wanted to make darn sure it didn't get omitted from this year's calendar too!  BTW, Is there any usual protocol for planning get-togethers for 'the gang'? If someone would like to set something up, I'd be obliged.

No protocol that I am aware of.
There is however an auction Saturday night which may be preceded by desert and there likely will be a hosted get together Sunday night off site, all subject to circumstances beyond the control of the respective organizers (last year Covid concerns caused Sunday’s get together to not occur).

Thursday night would be iffy as many people get in late or if somewhat local don’t come in until Friday. That leaves Friday night.

There is a Triangle Pen Club, but I am uncertain as to if they have anything planned.

In regard to the Hotel this year, the show block has been closed. The are however has a large number of hotels close by, so finding accommodations should not be difficult, one is literally across a shared parking lot from the venue.

I really want to come to this, but with gas prices the way they are, not sure I can afford the 275 mile trip from Charleston.

Perhaps you can share with someone you know in Charleston who might be interested in going to the Triangle Pen Show.

I know three people from Columbus who will be driving down together this year.

For me and my wife we include the Triangle Pen show in our Spring vacation plans. Our problem this year is figuring out what to do afterwards as the cost of the Outer Banks, our original planned add on has gotten too high. Any suggestions would be appreciated for other add on activities in NC.

We're planning to drive in Friday (~2 hours) & arrive as near 8am as is practical for us, & pay the 'earlybird' fee to get in before the regular 1pm opening time. Kinda doubting we'll stay all day....probably make the rounds & head back home.

'51, not knowing your particular 'cup o`tea', I grabbed something for your perusal: https://www.visitraleigh.com/ & hope you find it helpful. It's my home state, & would be happy to offer any help I can on which way you might want to turn while here.

Thanks for the link. Looking for something mobility challenged friendly as my wife requires the use of a wheelchair for all but short distances walking and steps are out beyond a couple.

NC has invested quite a bit in upgrading our museums around Raleigh, & they have very nice accommodations. I'll heartily recommend the Art: https://g.co/kgs/5wYaup
& Natural Sciences: https://g.page/ncmns
And there are several others (see site footnotes).
If you're into Space & the Cosmos, Morehead Planetarium (USA's oldest) is pretty awesome.
https://moreheadplanetarium.org/
I think the Triangle Club holds their meetings nearby. [I was wrong on this one - they meet over in Chapel Hill about 30 miles away. (Moved?) The club's website however, shows all meetings cancelled due to Covid, but their meeting place (Chapel Hill Public Library) is open right now & running.  ?? ]

Eats? Hoo boy! Theres so much you'll have your hands full trying to decide. (Then your belly full trying to stay awake! LOL)  Be sure to check out some proper Down East style BBQ while you're here....you might even be carrying some back home with ya!

Check the event calendars of these surrounding sites - there's tons of stuff going on, way too many to try to list here. Mind you, many are still in Covid revival mode, so you might have to mask up for some places.

& Maybe best of all, see you there?

Not making it this year.  It's a combination of the cost of gas (the Prius is in the shop and the last time I filled up the gas tank on the minivan it cost me over $81 US; and THAT was with me going to the local BJ's Warehouse gas pumps -- although at least it means I will get a discount the next time I shop at BJ's...).  Plus (although I'm fully vaccinated and double-boostered) COVID is apparently on the upswing again. :(  And it's a LONG trip from Pittsburgh and back.

Plus, I can't use it as excuse for a wedding anniversary the way I did the time I dragged my husband along, the second time I went....  (Although he DID tolerate me buying two Parker 51s -- including one in the Saturday night auction, and did manage to deal with being there all day Friday, and in the evening after dinner on Saturday).

Ruth, fuel actually would only likely run you $250. The bigger cost would be hotel accommodations. The solution to both would be to find some people to car pool and share a hotel room. Maybe too late for this year, but not for future shows.

With the expressed concerns, if not for this particular event, something to consider for other future events -or even this one, actually- is what I feel is an almost forgotten commodity: Amtrak. This isn't the first time (or place) I've seen travel cost create a deal-breaker because of gasoline prices. Curiosity, and my new home being some 100 yards or so from a double railroad track, got me to looking, and e.g., I with my senior privileges can go to New York City round trip for $99 from the Charlotte NC area. With this event being some 15 minutes from the railroad station, adding a rental car while there just might be cheaper than driving yourself. And I'll add that, of the 4 or 5 times I've ridden on trains, every one has been a wonderful adventure! (There's something about that rhythm!!)

Anyway, the point is, check your local Amtrak - you might be surprised.

Train travel possible from where I live for the last 90 years ( Interurban line was less than a mile away) from nearby town not available for the last 58 years. Public transportation by bus would take in excess of 18 hours with many transfers. We hope passenger train service will return.

If I had a private rail car, there is an available siding in my town which a wealthy business person used to keep his private rail cars on and there is a business park I might be able to keep a private rail car at less than a mile away, but as I am not wealthy, I do not have that option.

More realistic, but again out of my budget would be a private air charter from my local airport, also about a mile away. I frequently see executive jets flying in and out of it.

Well the two years I DID go down, I was taking the Prius, which is a LOT more fuel efficient than the Odyssey.  And gasoline was also a lot less expense....

So, mileage and fuel cost differences likely would double your driving costs.

As I mentioned, I know three people traveling down, all without their spouses/ significant others, just for the pen show which will allow them to cut costs.

As I thought there was an active Pittsburgh Pen club, I thought car pooling might be a possibility. If I was a bit younger and not retired, I can easily imagine being the fourth person in the group going down from Columbus. Thus my suggestion to you.

Yeah, that. ~8《

& I used to drive a 440HP GTO that got about 9 mpg, but gas was $0.30 a gallon.

And, get this...one of those 'gas wars' broke out, & it went to $.29 almost the whole summer!

LOL Ahhh, the progress of man! Now, what was that about "the good old days", again?

So....now it's a big NASCAR weekend here ....aka around here as Find Something To Do In Your Own Back Yard Weekend.

Hello, I am unfamiliar with a 440 HP GTO. What year was it made? Do you recall who modified it and how they raised the HP to 440 HP?
I used yo read a lot of Hot Rod magazines as I really wanted one when I was a youth.

Hah!  Reminds me of the story my mom told about where she grew up in West Virginia.  There were apparently two movie theaters in town, and the owners got into a price war to attract customers.  She said that prices went down to 5¢ US for a ticket (mind you, this was also during the Depression, and when she was in college in the late 1930s a meal at a NICE restaurant (i.e., one with a bar) would be 50¢).  Then the two owners finally mutually decided "This is STUPID!" and mutually agreed to a more reasonable price that was the same at each one....

On top of the price of gas, the repairs to the Prius (even with a used ABS module) are going to run about $1400. 😞.  Plus, my husband just got ANOTHER bill from the hospital where he had his surgery last year and I think that one was nearly as high....  And our heating bill has gone through the roof (over $350/month) -- even though temperatures have been warmer recently.

When I went to the Chicago Show last fall, one couple from the club flew there from Pittsburgh.  But since the site hotel didn't have an airport shuttle, it cost them something like $50 for a cab or Uber from the airport....  And, presumably, another $50 to get BACK to the airport for their flight home (I drove out and back, and it was a 2 day trip each way because I have to stop every couple of hours and walk around and give my back a break).  So when I was at Baltimore-Washington in March, and Frank from Federalist Pens asked me if I was going to Chicago THIS year, I said "NO!"

Raleigh might be in the budget again in the future, but for me it's an all-day drive each way (even with another driver in the car).  I might consider Baltimore-Washington again (I went one previous time a few years ago) because I had a good time both times I went.  But of course for me the "local" show is OPS -- that's only about a 3 hour drive each way from where I live.

It was a '69, 400ci Hurst 4-speed I bought used. The previous owner had blown the engine & the warranty replacement didn't work out, so they (name unknown, Pontiac or Dealership - we kinda figured both) decided to replace it with one of the special-order Ram Air III engines for all the trouble. That was the background...but basically, I added Hedman competition headers, a Racer Brown cam, & a LOT of work on that intake system.  And no 'They', it was 'Us'. My Dad owned garages, & I've been around cars & mechanics all my life, & he knew this fellow called Smokey Yunick that owed him a favor or two. We let him keep it a long month, & oh boy!  Anyway, never measured myself but we were told it dyno'd at 438....(I took the liberty. *blush*)

And, guess we better cut this before someone starts griping it's not the proper place for gas fumes.

Yeah, chatter would be the right place,

Wow, an incredible car. Do you know if it survived and if so where it might be?

And the final questions: what kind of fun did you do with such a machine, do you recall it’s qtr mile time, did you also do some brake work and what kind of tires did you use.

Sorry to sound like a kid, but it was a long time ago and I was a kid back then talking to other kids about cars, cars none of us had any hope of driving or owning, but which we might see at National Trails or a similar place.

Sounds like you had the bug, alright. LOL And to the rest, of course there's tales to tell, but far too much to try'n share here.  Tell ya what - I'll try to spot you at the show, & we might can get together over a cuppa motor oil or two. ~8}

Mostly an interest born out of what might have been.

My father 60+ years ago was a member of SCA, driving a Porsche 356. He and my mother road rallied. He totaled it in the mid sixties (with my little brother in the passenger seat, well pre car seat). It was never replaced. The marriage was totaled a bit later.

When my mother was later shopping for her first post divorce car she seriously considered a Camaro, but the buddy seats were a bit too small for growing 8 & 10 year olds.

So, no sport or high performance cars in my history, except in magazines.

Planning the trip, noticed a li'l something that should ease the pain for anyone who didn't get in on the Pen Show Special block of rooms at the Hilton.  Couldn't help wondering....is it all the ink stains we leave behind?

Well, we made it, there and back! My very 1st pen show!!

For Parker51 - I was pretty engrossed in the carnival, but did look around several times trying to spot you, with no luck. Don't know if you saw me, but I was the other guy in a wheelchair. We were there shortly after 8, & had to leave shortly after 13:00 to keep on schedule. I was pretty tuckered out on the way home!  Did you make it? Hope your vacation trip went/is going smoothly for you. I really missed not being able to meet & chat it up with you.  Hoping for a next time.

I bumped into Mike Matteson [Inkdependence] & chatted with him briefly. He later did his Friday live-stream from the show - a pretty nice presentation, here if you'd like to watch:
https://youtu.be/sToELzYdpSY
&
Dormouse has also put up a [shorter] walk thru video:
https://youtu.be/MvrhbhHpk4o
Both excellent coverage.

And oh yes -- I did discover the (hosting?) Triangle Pen Club's meetings are still suspended, pandemic-based, & the couple members that told me said no idea when they'd start back up again. <?>
