Lamy 2000 Mechanical Pencil

Hi,

Here is my review of the Lamy 2000 pencil. Despite the fact that I really like this pencil, in retrospect, I was a little hard on it when I wrote this review. The pencil itself is very good, and I recommend it with reservations. I use mine everyday and take it everywhere.

Also, please let me know what you think about this new review format. It was written using the Lamy 2000 pencil.

Very nice review, Dillon. I just took ownership of a Lamy 2000 FP and I'm considering a mechanical pencil at some point. Your comments on the eraser are especially helpful. Do you have any recommendations for other pencils you've enjoyed?

Let's see...try the Scribble leadholder. I also like the Pilot pencils very much.

If you have the 2000 fountain pen, you should get the pencil. :) FYI, the day after I got my 2000 pencil, it did a three metre backflip onto a hard floor and survived without a mark. It's well built like the fountain pen.

I have photos! Coming soon!

Nice work, Dillon. :)

I'm especially intrigued by the extent of engineering that went into this MP. It looks like it is well thought out... however, there appears to be a handicap in keeping so close to the Lamy 2000 fountain pen design. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the lead holder being seated so far back from the tip mean that a full centimeter or more of lead is wasted?

Staedtler came up with a double-clutch mechanism that supposedly utilizes over 97% of a lead stick. The Dave's Mechanical Pencil blog reviewed it HERE. It's an intriguing design, but perhaps too late in the life of the MP invention to warrant incorporating into more expensive MP designs.

Hi,

Staedtler didn't invent that, in fact, Pelikan had the double mechanism, but only for their thicker lead pencils (1.1 mm diameter leads) You could use the lead down completely in those pencils

Yes, you are right, there is a cm or so of lead wasted. However, if you are careful, the small urethane gasket (permanently seated and impossible for me to take a picture of) in the nosecone can hold the lead in such a way that you can use the lead until it is 2-3mm long before it falls out of the pencil. It is a very small hassle though because you have to click the pencil once, then push the stub of lead until it contacts the tip of the new lead.

I don't think it is a drawback cased by sticking with the Lamy 2000 design because the problem could be fixed with a redesign of the mechanism. (there is enough space in the front section for a more elaborate design). Most pencils lose a bit of lead about this long, so it is normal. :) If given the motivation and the idea, Lamy could certainly ask Schmidt to implement this idea in a redesigned mechanism for the 2000.

Dillo,

I have a Lamy 2000 .5mm pencil that I use virtually every day. It is a great full size pencil. The only way it could be better for me is if it had a big eraser.

Thanks for the review.

I usually carry around the nice "block" eraser. If you like, you can look at my Lamy Scribble review. Someone asked for recommendations on a nice big eraser.

Dillon, I hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your thread. After months of looking on and off, I found a nice Lamy 2000 MP on Ebay for under $20. This is stamped W. Germany, so I suppose that means it is at least 18-19 years old.

As you can see from the exploded view below, not much has changed in the time between when yours was made and mine. There are only a few differences I can see, most obviously on the clip and mechanism. There are no imprints on the clip. Rather, the Lamy 2000 imprint is stamped into the barrel. Even the eraser looks to be the same, although mine was hardened after so long in disuse. Finally, there is no indication of lead size (this is 0.7mm).

I'm curious, do any of the Lamy buffs in the house know tell-tale signs to dating these throughout the years? I'm assuming that my specimen dates somewhere between 1966 (launch of the 2000 line) and 1990 (reunification), but I wonder if I could be more precise. Did the MP come out at the same time as the FP?

Exploded view. Notice the pit about 1/3 of the way down the barrel, just under the reflection. This is from the ball on the underside of the clip.

LAMY 2000 W. GERMANY imprint. It doesn't show too well, but the barrel has a nice shiny patina.

I like this pencil, too. In fact, I prefer it to its fountain pen partner, which gave me plenty of leaky trouble. This is one of the best and best looking mechanical pencils on the market.

Wow, I wish I'd seen it, I might have given you some competition! I think it's a gorgeous looking pencil and I'd certainly love to have one to complement my equally gorgeous L2000 FP.

Dillon,

Thanks for sharing this great review with us.

When you write that the 2000's lead "snaps somewhat easily", you're describing a problem in the heart of the pencil's function. I concur. I have three Lamy thin lead pencils - a Safari, a Scribble, and a (0.7mm) 2000. Even after upgrading the Lamy lead to Pentel Ain, I find all the Lamy pencils to result in broken/snapped leads much more often than other pencils. I don't find that acceptable, and have to conclude that the mechanisms are at fault.

You write that the 2000 has a customized Schmidt mechanism - I don't know if you have some "insider" knowledge, but that's a very interesting observation. I'm not sure what this means for Lamy or Schmidt. I own perhaps a hundred mechanical pencils, and unfortunately place Lamy's mechanisms at the very bottom of the pile, quality-wise. This is an unfortunate contrast with their exteriors - which I regard as superior in design, with intriguing and interesting construction, materials, and shapes.

This seems to parallel the ongoing discussion of FPs at FPN - nice exterior designs and high prices often don't correlate with superior function.

I'd be glad to hear you thoughts - and those of other MP users.

Stephen

Hello. I currently have two Lamy Scribbles - the 3.15 mm "leadholder" version and the regular .7mm mechanical pencil. I really like how they feel, the thickness, the balance, the looks. Just about everything. Thing is they make great pocket pencils but I'd like something more full size for daily use at my desk at work & at home.

From the pictures, it almost looks like the 2000 is Scribble that has been made full size and nicer. Can anyone who has both comment & compare?

The other pencil I have been thinking about is the Pentel Kerry. It looks nice & is cheaper.

Thanks for this: near as I can tell, yours is the only review of Lamy's 2000 pencil. I had thought of getting one shortly after getting my 2000 FP, but I discovered Rotring's Trio-Pencil and that was that. This was over ten years ago...still have, and love, the Rotring.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
