Howdy from Houston

Penumbra

Recommended Posts

I am new on the site. I love Pelikans, astronomy, and good Cabernet. In a strange way, they all sort of compliment each other. The Pelikans last longer though. I am looking forward to chatting with fellow pen lovers. I am originally from Mukilteo, Washington. I've been in Texas for about 15 years.

Welcome to FPN! Hope you'll share pictures of some of your pens with us when you get a chance, seeing as how a glass of Cabernet is a bit more difficult to share online

Will you be going to see the nib-meister at Dromgoole's on Thursday?

I'll be driving over from Dale (about three hours) and brining my Pelikan and a couple others to get tweaked.

Dromgoole's? I am afraid that I have missed the pleasure of meeting this person (if, in fact, it is a person). Is Dromgoole a nib artisan?

Welcome to the Nuthouse, Penumbra. B)

Grab a seat and I hope to get to know you better around the boards. Have fun!

P.S. Which Pelikans do you currently have? You'll find more than a few fellow Pel lovers here.

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

In Pelikans I mostly have modern 400's, 600's, 800's and Special Editions. I am much more of an accumulator than a collector.

Dromgoole's is a big honking pen shop in Houston. Near Rice University. In the funky part of town.

Oh Penumbra, you're in big trouble if you haven't been in there yet. . .

Leave the checkbook and credit cards home. . . :)

They're having a nib-meister in on Thursday evening to tune up nibs.

Next month they're having a Mont Blanc handwriting expert come by. :)

Larry Dromgoole's this great guy who will talk pens until the cows come home.

You can trust a pen salesman with inky fingers. :)

A penumbra is a space of partial illumination (as in an eclipse) between the perfect shadow on all sides and the full light. In my case, I chose it as I am also only partially illuminated in many ways.

Thanks for the info on Dromgoole's. If their prices are competitive with the web, I am in big trouble. I'll check them out next week.

Dear Penumbra,

After having been burned on eBay, I'm now a lot more willing to pay the extra $$ to support a 'local' shop.

Actual customer service is worth the extra money to me.

That's not to say I won't go for any more online great deals (especially when it comes to exclusive inks), but I'm trying to avoid online, dropship dealers without an actual storefront.

Buyer beware!

Welcome Penumbra.

I'm another fellow texan, located in Dallas. I dropped by Dromgoggle's alst week when I was in town on business. It was the first time I was in ther shop and was very impressed with there inventory, sorry no vintage pens. But they do know some collectors in the area. Maybe that may be a way to resurrect the Lone star Pen Club. Put September 30th on your calender for the Dallas Pen Show.

Howdy Penumbra! and welcome to the Fountain Pen Nuthouse! :D Not only do we feed your addiction to fine writing instruments, but this is a great place to hang out at to answer all of your questions at, and make new friends. Likewise, we have a great forum for all of us Pelikan users to chat away in.

Sincerely yours,

Hi.

Despite ballboy's kind words, I'd not say I'm the resident Pelikan expert - but probably one of the most devoted to the brand. Rick Propas and Mark Van Blargan drop in on us now and then and they are both way outta my league. But I am addicted to Pelikan pens.

I too am into astronomy though in recent years I've not been able to do much with the hobby. I have a Celestron G5 i purchased about 8 years ago. I know I'd use it more if I'd spend the $100 on a motor-drive. :P

welcome to FPN - I'm kinda just lurking right now but did want to say hello to a fellow Texan. I'm outside of Houston but you know how that goes - darn place is so big that could mean anything.

best,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
