Please bring your lovely Italian collection. I am sure they are fantastic! Looking forward to meeting you.

To echo Jopen, please take photos and post them here!

@Jopen: It's a little easier for me to go; 14 hour plane ride to SFO and 45 min car ride to Japantown :)

So, what's stopping you? Get the plane ticket already :)

The drive shouldn't take more than 35 minutes...

Say high to the gang for me, I've got family in town and will be a no-show.

Dean's idea of local ink trading is brilliant. So please bring your inks and vials. And pipettes and syringes. I hope the cafe people won't look at us mad scientists too strangely.

I took you at your word, Lucia -- I read your post and promptly placed an order online for 6 glass vials with eyedropper caps!

Sayan, where did you order the glass vials? I got plastic ones from Dillo for the formal ink exchange. But I was thinking glass wouldn't be at as much risk of staining.

I subscribe to The Rule of 10 (pens, that is)

Sounds like fun. I'll try to make it (unpredictable schedule). If there's anything of particular interest that anyone would like me to bring, I'll (try to) do it.

I'd very much like looking over a Nakaya (etc).

Here's the link: Herbal Remedies

They cost $1.25 each. This was one of the first hits I got when I Googled for "bottle eyedropper cap" or something like that. I don't know how much plastic bottles would cost, but I liked that the glass bottle is a dark blue, so I hope it protects the ink from sunlight.

[Today's update]: Oops, spoke too quickly. I just got email from Herbal Remedies that they're out of stock on this item, so they canceled my order and refunded my money.

Interest is high in this Pen Posse outing, which is great!

Okay, the coffee shop I'm talking about is located inside the Kintetsu Mall, on the other side of the restaurants. It is called May's Coffee House.

Saturday, March 28, 11:00 AM, JAPANTOWN (Nihonmachi).

If you enter from the Peace Plaza, the door to Kintetsu Mall is on your right. Walk down the slight incline and turn left at the first opportunity. You will see a coffee shop, something like Cafe Hana, but that's not the one I mean. Keep walking, following the path to the right, and there is May's Coffee House.

If you park in the underground garage and take the elevator to the shop level, then walk straight out, then make a right (a restaurant will be to your left) and another right, go past the cafe (Cafe Hana?), keep going, make another right, and there is May's Coffee House.

If you get there early and go to Kinokuniya Stationery first, then when you leave that store, do not take the stairs. Walk catty-corner to a passage way (this is actually a covered bridge that spans Fillmore Street below) and when you can either go straight or make right, make the right, then make the next left, walk another 20, 30 feet, and May's Coffee House will be on your left. It'll be the last structure before the tables and chairs.

Kevin, my mother's best friend was Harutane Chiba, who was a ninth-level black belt in Kendo and had two dojos, one in Fresno and one in Japan. I don't know anything about Kendo myself, but I wondered if you knew Chiba-sensei. (My brother and I called him Mr. Chiba.)

Why, that's the Saturday before Spring Break. San Francisco's not THAT far from me.

Thanks for the direction.

Yes, Mr. Chiba is well known in Kendo world. I don't know him personally, but I mean, he is like Master Yoda, and us younglings can only admire from afar. I was taught by my uncle who was the instructor for national team... I mean, he is good, but NOT that good.

If you happen to have a Sakura-Kawa in blue you could bring along, I'd love to see one.

Regular. M nib. :)

This is kind of cool, I can bring all my pens and not feel like I'm the person overwhelming everyone with the $$ value of my collection.

Ah'll be there! (I'll take a break from writing my dissertation, that is!)

And for all you inklovers, I have a special surprise.

Since I'm coming by bicycle, I won't be bringing my entire ink collection, but I can bring any bottles to swap a vial's worth with anyone. Last time I met with Deirdre she hooked me up with a few that really helped inform me of what's what! So useful!!! Anyway, just take a look at any of my ink scans and PM me if there's something you'd like for me to bring.

Deirdre, I'll bring the Platinum Koi Music if you're still interested in that trade. If not, don't worry.

Ooh, urushi up close?! uh oh.

Yes, yes! I am. I'll bring the Visconti. :D

I've just been incredibly stressed and busy and our schedules haven't synced well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
