Pen Posse Nihonmachi

ethernautrix

Recommended Posts

Kevin (winedoc) is bringing several Danitrio pens to help me decide what size and nib I like best, so if you're interested in these fabulous pens, too, then this is your chance to see them in person. Otherwise, just come for the Pen Talk and coffee (or tea) (or whatever).

Also, Kinokuniya is here.

Saturday, March 28 at 11:00 AM

A cafe in Kintetsu Mall area of Japantown -- If you enter the building to the right of the Peace Plaza and walk straight past the various restaurants (for instance, Mifune (or MmmmmmMifune)), there should be a cafe on the right.

I'll get details and report back, but I wanted to give you-all a heads up.

Wow. Pen Posse is hosting so many events each week, I think we may need to buy our own headquarters. I'm sure we can get one in San Francisco cheap for like $2 million.

I subscribe to The Rule of 10 (pens, that is)

1) Parker Sonnet 1st gen 2) Pelikan 200 yellow 3) Parker 51 vac 4) Esterbrook trans J 5) Esterbrook LJ "Bell System Property" 6) Sheaffer Snorkel Valiant fern green 7) Waterman 52.5V 8) Parker 75 cisele 9) open 10) open (I'm hankering for a Doric)

How far south in the South Bay are you? What about taking the train from San Jose? It takes about an hour, hour and a half.

looking forwad to see everyone. There is a parking garage which you can either enter from Geary or Post Street, so no need to look for street parking. There is also a small stationary store across from Kinokuniya :-)

Woo-hoo! I certainly intend to come and drool over the Danitrios! I've never held an urushi pen, so this should be very instructive!

PB--are you sure we'll actually be allowed to hold them?

I SWEAR! I had nothing to do with ToasterPastry's freak-accidental destruction of his Sheaffer Balance Junior! I tried a bunchv of his other pens, and those are ALL OKAY!

(Laughing.)

Kevin is bringing his pens specifically so I can try them. He's not afraid!

P.S. Didn't you-all get to hold my Nakaya Piccolo Cigar? It's urushi.

Aww man! I'm in Socal otherwise I'd go and stalk Kevin again. One of the highlights of the LA Pen Show was making every excuse in the book to look at Kevin's pen offerings. Consider you folks up in the bay area VERY luck to have Kevin up there.

Actually, I've seen (and admired) your Nakaya Piccolo from afar, but haven't actually held it yet. Do bring it along to the urushi-fest, if you can, so we can compare it against the Danitrios. I'll bring along a couple of Pilots and Sailors -- deanknow, I'll bring the Sailor Pro Gear with Zoom nib.

Wonder what Kevin's personal collection of pens will be like!

Urushi fest sounds good...

I do have one Nakaya, so I'll bring that too :-)

Cool, looking forward to trying the Zoom nib... Hopefully my M800 R. Binder customized for max flex nib will be here so you can take it for a spin, I paid for a rush job (owch). Does anyone want to do ink trades? Maybe I should start a new pen posse topic regarding an ink trade.

I have the following that I do not plan on using for various fussy reasons...

Noodlers Brown 3 oz (95% full)

Noodlers Yellow 3oz (80% full)

Noodlers Black 3oz (80% full)

Noodlers Luxury Blue 1 oz (90% full)

Noodlers Fox Red 1 oz (50% full or empty)

Diamine Sepia 80 ml (95% full)

Pen & Ink No -Shellac India Ink 30ml (90% full)

Will trade for Montblac scented or other brands of interesting colors

WE should plan a LA/Orange County Pen Posse!

Dean's idea of local ink trading is brilliant. So please bring your inks and vials. And pipettes and syringes. I hope the cafe people won't look at us mad scientists too strangely.

I took you at your word, Lucia -- I read your post and promptly placed an order online for 6 glass vials with eyedropper caps!

To echo Jopen, please take photos and post them here!

@Jopen: It's a little easier for me to go; 14 hour plane ride to SFO and 45 min car ride to Japantown :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
