Introduction:

Camlin is a major manufacturer of fountain pen inks in India. This company was founded by the late Mr. Sharad Dandekar. This pen is a tribute to the founder from his son in the form of a fountain pen which is embedded with the signature of the founder.

Presentation:

The packing is fairly simple with an ivory colored outer jacket enclosing a faux black leather covered pen case. The box contains the pen, a piston converter and the pamphlet. One side of the pamphlet lists the features of this new pen(scan above) and the reverse contains the filling instructions.

The Pen:

Looks fairly simple and ordinary at first glance. The cap is metallic and the body is claimed to be made of a high impact resin. I bought the black color, it is also available in maroon and navy blue colors. The pen feels quite solid in hand with a moderate comfortable weight. The uncapping and capping action is very precise. The clip is very well designed and it is linen shirt friendly too, clipping and unclipping is a breeze. The initials SD feature on the clip.

The embedded signature:

Filling system:

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii197/hari317/SD/IMG_2785.jpg

The filling system is C/C with international cartriges. Carts are not included with the pen but a piston converter is. I immediately refilled a Pelikan GTP cart with Waterman BB and stuck into the pen, ink start was immediate, no cart squeezing or shaking was required.

Writing Performance:

When I initially saw the nib, I thought it was too small in proportion to the overall size of the pen. However this small size combined with the profile of the section made writing a very comfortable experience. The nib is gold plated steel with SD engraved. it is quite smooth with a generous flow, the section has a gentle step in the section which I thought will be a bother but I did not notice it while holding the pen, it seems like Camlin have hit upon a balance here.

A small writing sample:

Dimensions:

Capped: 137mm

Posted: 152mm

Unposted: 123mm

Barrel dia: 14.3mm

Section dia: 10.8mm, 12.7mm

Cost:

This pen retails at 600INR which is also the MSRP. It translates to about 12USD at current rates.

Overall Impression:

I had bought this pen last weekend and used it for a day at office. When I took it out yesterday to photograph and write the sample, I found that it started up instantly. The pen is not a great looker IMHO but I like it for it's comfortable. The clip is very well designed. overall I give it a

Hari

Thank you Fateh! I would personally have liked a monotone white steel nib.

The Camlin brand name is new to me. Thank you for the informative review. A nice looking pen I must say and for the price, good value for money too.

Thank you Rahul, I am told Deccan also is carrying this pen in all colors.

Thank you Mike. Camlin makes some piston filler pens like the 47 and sleek. I had reviewed the 47 last year. They also make a pen called the Trinity which was reviewed recently by Shrujaya.

Thank you Andrew. Yes, it is a good pen and 12USD is a small amount in the international arena but is quite a large sum to spend on a pen in India so I am not sure if the pen will be a success here... their previous piston model the Premier was a huge failure due to its price.

Nice find Hari! Good to see that Indian brands too are coming out with their own signature lineups. I'm hoping to see more of these in near future. Your handwriting sample shows that the nib is pretty neat; I like nibs that write this way!

Did you have a chance to check out Today's pens? They too were gonna come out with their lineup of high end fountain pens.....

Cheers!

Steve

This is a nice pen Hari. A bit costly in Indian standard! Not for school children. Nib tip shows a good amount of tipping material, have you tried writing with nib up-turned position? I liked the cap design with signature. How end of the barrel looks? What is there? Good photos as usual.

Thanks Hari!

Abhik.

Thank you Abhik. I have not used the nib upside down however. The end of the barrel has a metallic jewel, a glimpse of which is visible in the photo where the pen is taken apart.

It is a really nice looking pen and a great value.

Thanks for sharing Hari. :)

The pictures are very beautiful and informative, they could be used as a promotional tool by the company.

Thank you Brian and Richard.

Thank you Anne. I have noticed that Pendemonium is carrying some custom ground Camlin piston pens and so is Hisnibs(Norman Hasse), maybe they can try to bring this pen to the International audience.

Hi Hari,

Thanks for the excellent review of SD. One complaint though about the company. They do not advertise the availability of such a good pen. Even their website has no mention about this pen.

So, if you had not reviewed, we (even in India) would never have come to know of such a pen.

Also, they must see to it that it available in every big city. It is not available in my city.

Great job. Keep up the good work.

Thanks & Regards,

Gampu.

Its a nice pen though, I'd wish for it a bigger converter to contain more ink considering the diameter of the pen itself.

Fountain Pen is for people who have a delicate taste in writing

Thank you Gampu, I agree about the advt. part. This pen is still not available in many shops, most probabaly since it will be a slow moving item considering its high cost in the Indian market context. I think you can try in Madras, it will surely be available.

Thanks! I would have wished for a piston filler like the Camlin special editions in the past. However the Pelikan GTP5 cart with a good ink capacity fits the pen well. I have not yet used the converter.

Hari

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
