MaiDo fountain pen sale

For FPN members in the San Francisco Bay Area, MaiDo in the big Westfield mall in SF is having a 10% off sale from April 1-15. If the California Legislature and Arnie end up hiking our sales tax by another 1%, then I guess the discount will just cover our sales tax.

I do not know if the sale extends to the MaiDo down in the South Bay. I'd call and ask!

I subscribe to The Rule of 10 (pens, that is)

1) Parker Sonnet 1st gen 2) Pelikan 200 yellow 3) Parker 51 vac 4) Esterbrook trans J 5) Esterbrook LJ "Bell System Property" 6) Sheaffer Snorkel Valiant fern green 7) Waterman 52.5V 8) Parker 75 cisele 9) open 10) open (I'm hankering for a Doric)

I've not been to the one in SF but I've bought stuff from the one in San Jose.

MaiDo carries the major Japanese brands:Pilot,Sailor, and Platinum. They sell, in many cases, the Japanese market stuff. I bought a Black Pilot Custom 74 and a Platinum Koi celluloid last time I was there. They had Sailor 1911 models and some Pro gear and a King of Pen. They also have cartridges and converters for sale.

Then they also sell a whole range of Japanese stationary.

Anybody know if they have an online presence? Did a google search, and only came up with yellow pages and business directories.

The one in San Jose is at Santana Row.

It's about 5-6 shops down from the Sur La Table.

I have looked for a web site to no avail.

Mai-do also has a frequent buyer card--I think if you spent $100, you'd get 10 bucks off on your next purchase.

I stopped by yesterday PM. I am a newbie on pen pricing overall, but I noticed a great deal on the Pilot Capless. They were marked at $100. With 10% off to $90, I do not think anyone beats it.

By any chance, would MaiDo carry Waterman pens?

They do not. They only carry Japanese pens (and stationery).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
