My New S.T. Dupont Orpheo

Hi fellow penners:

I want to share and show you my new S.T. Dupont Orpheo/Olympio.

This is a very nice pen and really a robust one, a very nice platinum finish and almost impervious to scratches. I have now 2 S.T.Dupont Orpheos, this is the first one I bought 3 weeks ago. It has an 18K gold M nib and really a pleasure to write with, very smooth and has a very nice ink flow.

The second Orpheo/Olympio I bought a week ago has a very nice deep black china lacquer which is also almost insensitive to scratches - I am going to post a picture of it later.

I just hope you will like the pictures!

Usually I don't like all metal pens. But this one is really nice! Congratulations-enjoy!

Just bought a Dupont Montparnasse myself. I'll let you know how it feels when it gets here. Dupont certainy has a good reputation for nib smoothness!

That looks very much like the one I just bought. Mine isn't here yet either.

peter from sherwood park: Thanks you! Nice you like the photos, I am going to post photographs of my other opheos soon.

adam11: Nice you like this metal pen. I like it because I love the feel of its weight in my hand and the durability of the pen itself.

wspon: Yeah, the nib is really nice designwise and performancewise, very smooth and the ink flow is great. Nice you having bought a new orpheo and hopefully it comes soon so that you can enjoy it. BTW. what nib do have on it?

sundance14: And how about your inked orpheo? Nice to rekindle your interest with it again, enjoy and share us some information about it!

sexauerw: Hopefully you get your new orpheo soon so you can enjoy it. Don't forget to share us some experiences with it. Goodluck!

very elegant and sober pen. Its nib is more smooth than the Exception and the Edson nib. Cartier also makes great pens.

Georges (or anyone else who knows),

How would you compare the smoothness of the nibs between the Orpheo and the Waterman Man 100? The reason I'm asking is because these are the two pens I'm looking to get. But if one is noticeably smoother than the other, I may just get one.

The nib of the man100 existed in two generations:

first generation nib with the hole and made from 1983 till 1989 often being flexible

second and last generation nib with the globe and made from 1989 till 1994 often being semiflex

The man100 is a particular pen, you must try one and then try an Orpheo, get the one you like the most.

As long as the seller didn't sell the same pen twice, I'd say we are OK, Bill

What nib has yours got? Mine is a B, which means She-who-must-be-obeyed will get more use out of it than I will. I have a devious plan to buy another gold plated Montparnasse so I can swap nibs over when I want.

In a way, the lacque finish Duponts are the quintessential product as they specialized in this and did a better job than most with it. I think it is interesting that their nibs get almost universal praise - an an implicit condemnation of the quality control of other manufacturers, who if the evidence of bad nibs out of the box is any indication, seem to exercise little to no nib testing.

Psst - Bill and I bought Montparnasse, not Orpheos. You know, the top of the line model that isn't being faked all over the place.... :happyberet:

I really like my Olympio XL. But it writes a tad too thick for me as a medium, and I think it has a little bit of a babies bottom, in that it doesn't start sometimes. Any tips, or should I have a nibmeister grind it to a stub?

Also, how do you carry it. I find it's fine on a jacket pocket, but it seems too heavy for my dress shirt pockets without causing major sag.

I'm sure we're OK. I bought mine from KMLST Moorthi and he says it has an F/M nib.

Maybe try a more dry ink, say MB or Pelikan and see if the line is more to your liking. Then, if the only problem is an occasional hard start, I would just enjoy it. J

Greenpiece asked about the Orpheo vs the Man 100 regarding nibs.

Hard to answer. Both are firm and smooth. The hard part here is that the smoothness differs. I think if handed the Dupont in a blindfold test I might really be able to tell it by feel. It is almost slick smooth.

Personal preference: Dupont for me between these two.

I am surprized to know about the "M" nib thickness of your orpheo. Mines has among my FPs with "M" nibs the thinest, it writes almost like F of my duofold and my MB 149. You may probably try onother ink. For a while I am using black quink of parker, I am gonna try other inks later though.

This writes "thick" with all my inks:

Noodlers FPN Galileo

Noodlers BB

Noodlers Swishmix Aquamarine

Noodlers Dragon's Napalm

Noodlers Swisher Devil Red

Noodlers Zhivago (Acutally it's slightly thinner with this ink)

Private Reserve Purple Mojo (It's the worse with this one.)

Does it lay thick lines on all kinds of paper? That happens with my orpheo too on some kinds of paper.

Nice pen! If my vague memory serves me well, I like the look of this one better than some other S.T. Dupont fountain pens I've seen.

My new (to me) Montparnasse arrived today and I've already inked it. It has an F/M nib that is as smooth as glass and leaves a line exactly as advertised, halfway between a fine and a medium. I'm going to really enjoy this pen. Here's a montage of my S. T. Dupont mini-collection, I really love the lacquer pens, but the platinum Fidelio is very nice as well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
