New to group and collecting

I'm new to this group and to pen collecting. As a youngster I used fountain pens in school and , as many others, I got away from using them as ball points and other writing instruments became more popular. My wife and I are both interested in fountain pens and we now have thirteen most of them are Sheaffers or Esterbrooks with a couple of Parkers thrown in for good measure. This group looks like a place to read up on our pens and maybe ask of questions of others as they pop up. We are both looking forward to our association with you all.

Hello and welcome

This is a place for people that use their fountain pens. Check out the "Write Stuff" forum as well as penmanship for uses of pens.

Afain welcome,

Welcome to the group. It sounds as if you already have a pretty good collection underway.

Interesting that both you and your wife like fountain pens - I'm firmly convinced that most members prefer to keep their collections (or at least the cost of them) secret from their other (better?) halves!

Or is this just me.......

Best wishes anyway,

Andy

It's Interesting that you said that because I felt compelled to come clean and tell my wife that I had purchased some pens about which she knew nothing. I told her I had spent some money on some pens and when I told her the amount I had spent she said, "Well we can afford it." Believe me if I had confessed about some new fishing equipment it would not have been received in the same manner.

Hi Mike an welcome to the FPN! Most wives that I know can't see why their husbands would spend more $2.00 for a pen. Likewise, most men I know feel the same way. However, in your case its really wonderful that both parties love to collect great pens and use them. B)

Sincerely yours,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
