Montblanc 146 SS -review

This is not a typical pen for me to aquire.I am very focused at Montblanc's WE pens and Sheaffer Snorkel's.Anything else usualy is being pushed a side simply due to lack of funds.

Well since Bryant was selling his pen and the pictures were so tempting I must admit I found it hard to resist.

I jumped in and asked him to send it to me.

I had doubts if this is the right pen for me and I'll be honest I still do but not because of the pen.

This is not a cheap pen but wow what a looker and how impressive could a simple silver pen be.

 

This pen is the stainless steel model and not the silver sterling!!!

 

There is nothing yellow about this pen or in this pen,its pure silver colour and other then the two tone nib its silver/white all around.I think silver coloured pens look best when they are all silver,the look of this pen is a perfect combination of simplicity and classic lines.

The cigar shape simply works wonders on me.

The pen is used and thus there are few very light signes of use but overall the condition of pen pen is great but if you need your pen to be constantly shiny then mind you the moment you touch the pen you will see you fingerprints on it.This really doesnt bother me too much as I am very anal about the condition of my pen but I simply give it a little wipe at the end of the day and for me thats enough.

To my surprise the pen is lighter then most of the WE pens in my collection that base their design on the Le Grand (146).Just like all other 146 it is bottom heavy due to the piston in its back but I always enjoyed this type of configuration and I think its great for writing.

Of course this is a piston filler. This piston is very smooth and take a very nice bib amount of ink in its body.The Le Grand is a full size pen (not oversize like the 149) and hold enough ink for many days of use.

The 18K nib on this pen is medium and it is actualy a fat medium nib,its too fat for me and add to it a very nice wet nib and you got yourself an ultra smooth/glass smooth nib.This is perfect for those who like smooth smooth nibs but for those like me who like some feedback with some light toothiness to it this nib is a bit boring.I think 95% of people will love this nib,I know my taste in these matters is a bit different then other.

Conclusion

 

This pen is a shiny pen,it will attract a bit more attantion then a regular 146/Le Grand but it is not super attantion graber like the gold filler model.

The cigarshape and relative light weight makes this pen a very very comfortable pen for everyday use.Add to this a big ink resurvoir and you got yourself a perfect everyday companion.Oh and dont forget the traditional inkview window that I almost forgot to mention as I am so used to it from my MB pens and this really is a looker and a user both at the same time.

I am still not sure what I plan on doing with this pen.I am totaly in love in MB WE pens and this is not a WE pen.In a weak moment I might put it for sale but if in few weeks I will see this one is a keeper I will probably send the pen to Sean to grind the nib to a nice wet fine nib and for me this will be a super user.

Oh and Tzutzik simply put his paw on it and in few seconds told me I got another winner and he loves it so you got a PAW UP from the master himself :meow:

I also like the fact that the section is resin; I bet this is super-comfortable and the weight is just right. I bet MDI would love this pen, wish I could get one for him!

Great review. Sorry to go off topic, but I have noticed in many of your reviews that you prefer a toothy nib (as do I).

I thought I would recommend you checking out the Omas Emotica in fine point. I love mine and the titanium

nib is a little flexy with some really nice bite, even on ultra-smooth Rhodia/Apica paper. It really is a joy

to write with (for those that like feedback that is).

I thought I would recommend you checking out the Omas Emotica in fine point. I love mine and the titanium

nib is a little flexy with some really nice bite, even on ultra-smooth Rhodia/Apica paper. It really is a joy

to write with (for those that like feedback that is).

Bryant is now an Omas dealer and I asked him already few days ago to check the price on an Emotica for me and let me tell you the price is amazing.

2 problems in regards to the Emotica

 

1.Its a C/C filler

2.Its not a WE pen

 

I will get an Emotica sooner or later but right now I am very focused on WE pens.

Wow... tons of Stainless Steel! It looks a lot like the Sailor King of Pen in stainless steel. But I like the resin section on the MB... easier to grip. Plus, it's a piston filler (unlike the Sailor cartridge filler).

Nice pen Amir, I do love that model. I purchased the exact same one in Ohio at the show last year and really enjoy using mine. The only thing I would add is that the cap does not like to be posted on mine. I recall that you do not post your pens, so not an issue for you. On this pen the steel is so highly polished that the cap will not stay put when posted.

 

The dichotomy of the steel and the black ink view window really is striking. Of all the pens in my daily user case, this is the one that garners the most compliments.

It means Munchkin in Hebrew.

Actualy officialy his name is Harley but to me Harley is a bikers name and my boy is a big cuddly teddy bear so I thought Tzutzik is a much better name for him.

You are right Sean I never post so this is not a problem for me.

At work I used the MB and then my beloved Omas Paragon that you so skilfuly tweaked and the different is big (nib wise).

If I will keep the pen I will really need you to regrind this puppy to a wet fine for me.
