New Conid pen from Belgium

A few days ago I received one of the first beta versions of the Conid pen. This fountain pen is manufactured by Werner Helsen & Marc Groven who set up a new company to produce this pen.

Together with Francis Goossens (fountainbel), a well-known mechanical designer & fountain pen expert (almost all of my vintage Sheaffer Vac-Fil pens ended up being restored by Francis), they came up with the idea to produce the first fountain pen made in Flanders (Belgium), a tribute to the plunger-filler system.

Francis has gone trough many different design stages during this project which he displayed here on FPN.

Finally the pen's design reached a stage that first examples are being manufactured.

My pen is the sleek version made from red hard rubber; the nib is a 18K Bock nib which writes a smooth line slightly being on the broader side.

The pen is of larger size, slightly smaller compared to a modern Montblanc 149

My pen came in a nice cardboard box with a complimentary CD and notepad

The trim is made from polished stainless steel

The cap features a specia bajonet mechanism which holds the cap securely

Ink view windows will allow you to check level of ink as well as to see part of the plunger filler system

You've certainly got our attention with this beautiful pen but, as OldGriz noted, we want to know more!

Thanks for sharing this with us. I personally like the design (and the pen overall) very much. Is it possible to post some pictures with the filling plunger rod extended? Also what is the material used for the clip and the cap lip ring? is it "plated over brass" or SS?\ I would also be interested to know the ink capacity. I am sorry, too many questions...

Regards,

Hari

Let's see if I can answer some of the questions (I've only had the chance to use the pen at work yesterday):

  • So far I've filled the pen once (with Noodler's Aircorp Blue Black) and the plunger filler worked nice and smooth. This feels similar to filling a Pilot 823 or any Sheaffer Vac-Fil.
  • I think right now this pen is offered with a "medium" Bock nib only but I've seen some of Francis' pens fitted with other nibs as well. My pen writes smoothly with the ink flow being on the wet side; also the medium nib tends towards a broader medium.
  • For price and avilability please contact Marc at marc.groven@conid.be .
  • As far as I remember Francis stated that the pen holds 2.2 ml of ink.
  • The pen appears to be well made. I especially like the way the bajonet opens with a "click" when removing the cap from the closed pen.

Like the pen but the cap band and inkview windows would make me pass on purchasing it.

I like the large, smoth cap band. This is necessary to allow the bajonet machanism.

Francis also showed pens with a different barrel design which does not feature the additional binde with the ink view windows. Here are some of his images:

Wow!

That pen looks really awesome, I so want one! Where do I sign up for one? I really like the idea of creating a tribute to the vacuum filler. Anyways, to the O.P, thanks for showing an already broke student pictures of a beautiful pen that he probably just has to buy at one point  (So little money, so many pens to try)

Greetings from Holland,

I kind of like that group of ovid ink windows. While they block some of the view, they are different. They look nice carved of the hard rubber.

Thanks for sharing.

Love the pen. And I, for one, find the window very attractive - it might even convince me to do something as crazy as bying of of theses. The design is audacious and seems very functional.

I like the slim version where the ink window is a clear ring flush with the barrel instead of those unsightly slots that IMHO will gather dust and grit quickly.

Idea. Do a demonstrator version with semi transparent materials. That would be great.

How many times do I have to post this?

All new pens should go through me for testing and evaluation before they are offered for sale.

Pm me for address.

The ink windows are a little weird, but I like the rest. The bayonet cap sounds pretty cool, but then I'm a photographer and like bayonet attachments to begin with. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
