In the spirit of this, I thought I'd ask.

(Tongue ever-so-slightly in cheek...).

Nothing but hair on my wrists. I have yet to find one of the Esterbrook chronographs from the 40s so I use my cell phone as a clock.

One of my Gold Pocket watches of course...Well it's grey...perhaps I should use a silver one or a nice small 1930's Buliva.

Mechanical, must be mechanical....Yep, Jeans, jeans jacket, gold pocket watch with gold chain and my Esterbrook, and wing tipped shoes of course.

A Citizens Eco-drive Titanium perpetual date Chronometer.

I like it for alot of the same reasons I like Esties. It's all but indestructable, looks nice and does what it's supposed

to do with no extraneous fiddling needed. (Accurate to +/- <15 sec @ month and never needs winding or batteries)

Seiko Quartz, Tissot Quartz, Seiko Automatic Divers Watch or a Vintage Omega (non-bling version). I like the same kind of watches as pens - non flashy ones but nice.

I wear the same watch(es) that I wear with my MBs- nada. I have my phone in my pocket, which acts as my phone. The only watch I "wear" is a crappy Fossil WristPDA- a watch that runs PalmOS. That doesn't happen often, though...

Oddly enough, the FPN is one of the few places I have contact with folks from around the US and the world. I'm pretty local otherwise. I'd no idea I was such an unpretentious proletarian- sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one over 25 years old around here who doesn't own a tux, a beemer, or an expensive watch. :P

I am waaaayyyyy over 25. No tux (neither does hubby), no beemer, and no expensive watches. I have several watches and they range from a Seiko I bought when I graudated college to a Walmart cheapie that matches a necklace I have. I guess that makes me semi-snobbish to coordinate my accessories? I do draw the line at my pens, though :)

Full disclosure: I'm also in the phone-as-timepiece camp. Haven't worn a watch since about eighth grade.

I have to admit, I was just a little amazed at the original MB forum post. It had never even crossed my mind to accessorize my dubonnet red J... Then again, I drive a jeep, wear jeans, and have never spent more than $40 for a pen.

I just read through that thread - wow! I wonder if I have to give back my one and only MB?

Well - it is a Monte Rosa, so maybe they's just snip off the snowflake and I can keep the rest... :roflmho:

Just gouge out the snowflake and epoxy an Estie jewel in there.

Breitling Rotary, unless it's the £5 watch I bought on the Tottenham Court Road when I was on a day workshop gig and left my watch at home. No doubt there are some that match, pen, watch, shoes, belt, car...

Disclaimer: this is a bit of a free form ramble/rant. While it sounds like I'm making some judgments, I'm really not. If you're offended, berate me via PM rather than here.

Full disclosure: I'm also in the phone-as-timepiece camp. Haven't worn a watch since about eighth grade.

I stopped wearing one in the 5th grade. I don't like wearing any sort of jewelry, be it watches, ring or necklaces. I don't even like pens clipped to my tshirt if I'm not wearing an undershirt. I did manage to wear my wedding ring for a while (my wife thought that I shouldn't even try, just stick it in the safe or skip one altogether), but it's a bit loose since losing a bunch of weight. Wristwatches feel restrictive somehow.

Just gouge out the snowflake and epoxy an Estie jewel in there.

No need to gouge! The Monte Rosa's derby unscrews quite easily- ironically, it's easier to repair than an Esterbrook's captop. Or maybe not ironically, MBs up until the 1960s were really great pens, among the best in the world. But anyway, you can unscrew the derby off of most any pre-1960s (and lots of post-60s) MBs- maybe we can make a little replacement derby to make our MBs a little more ... acceptable. :P

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but like MYU I've thought of putting a bit of tape over the snowflake on my 146s- I'm afraid to have anyone chat me up because they think I'm some beemer driving business man... for shame! :D

Nah, it isn't snobbish. Maybe if you thought I was a lesser person because I didn't coordinate my watch, necklace, beemer and pens. :)

It just didn't occur to me until pretty recently that a large percentage of folks around here are high-income doctors, lawyers, businessfolk, and professors thoroughly ensconced in the culture of the affluent. When I started using FPs beyond a few Sheaffer Viewpoints I just assumed it was a lot of folks into history, writers with romantic personalities, artists into sketching and calligraphy, German college students, civil service holdouts and revolutionaries with a penchant for the anachronistic. As absurdly silly as that sounds! I guess there was a big blank "I dunno!" hole and it filled up with the few people whom I knew who used FPs.

Heck, it hasn't occurred to me that certain brands of stuff won you points- I thought that sort of thing was stuck in high schools, gangs, and country clubs. What can I say? I live a blissfully ignorant life in what seems to be an awfully egalitarian part of the US- maybe Northern Minnesota should secede with bits of SD, ND, WI, MI, and Ontario to make their own Midwestern Nation. :P

What watch do I wear with my Estie? One that works - just like my pen

Professors? Ensconced? Affluence? Those people are in administration, better money and no teaching or research. Most university instructors are lucky if they can afford an Esterbrook, and have to tell time by the noise of students packing up when the class is supposed to end. If you look at projected lifetime earnings by level of higher education, it rises until you get to a PhD, and then there is a precipitous drop.

Academics are also not known for their ability to coordinate attire and accessories.

I must say I enjoy this thread even better than the "fake-spotting" threads. But some members might have fragile egos. (Including me, it looks like! )

I have one Estie, but no MB.

I would never have thought about coordinating my watch with my pens until these threads came up.

I have three watches. Two work : a Seiko chronograph from the early Seventies, and a Tissot. The third one needs fixing: a Timex, older than the Seiko.

I wear whatever watch suits my fancy on any given day.

I do, however, coordinate my Seiko with my tennis racket (Head, if reader wants to know) because I would never wear the other watch while playing tennis. Sunday is usually tennis day.

Lumpen intelligentsia here. Yep, i care about history. At times, i write, though not very romantically. I'm into sketching and calligraphy, yes, and a would-be revolutionary, with an obvious penchant for the anachronistic. I use fps. What can i say?

I usually like to resist Garrison-Keillor-ising it, but there is something different about these parts.

Watch? As a teacher, i like to have a watch in the classroom. I wear an enormous Japanese digital watch marketed to fishermen. It has a compass, barometer, etc. I don't think anyone who cares about watches would like this one.

I think I found my people! Do I have to ditch the vintage MB, Omas and UK Parker to join? :)

Don't have a MB. Have several Esterbrooks. Can't stand anything on my wrists. My phone is my watch.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
