I have been reading some of the posts on the network from time to time and thought now is as good a time to join as any.

Several years ago a physician at KUmed was illustrating something to me and out comes a nice gold fountain pen. Have no idea the type but I liked it. Shortly after I bought my first Phileas. I found I really enjoyed writing when using a fountain pen. I tried a couple nice rollerballs or ball points and made some of my own but I still enjoy a fountain pen best. Fountian Pens just have character. A couple years ago, in my middle years, I started college full time and with all the writing I do I always use a fountain pen. I rotate through the one's I picked up over the years. A Cross Townsend, 3 Parker Sonnets, 2 Waterman Phileas, and after reading this forum a new Pelikan M200 which I am looking forward to using after spring break. Now I have to think of the next pen to add? Perhaps a Parker 51 everyone seems to rave about?

Hi Michael,

If you're in the Ozarks, we're likely within waving distance. Let me know if you find any good pen and ink sources in a building (as opposed to cyberspace). I tried the one lead I had last week, and she'd never even heard of Noodler's. (I nearly cried.)

Hello and welcome to FPN!

Welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy that new Pelikan! You may have already read about these but if you're doing lots of notetaking the aero "51" in particular is great because of the ink capacity - as would be a Wality 69L, which is an eyedrop filler that holds like a gallon or so of ink. And if you really get into the fancy pantsy pens, a DaniTrio Densho is another eyedrop filler with some pizazz to its nib. I'm such a bad influence.

I have a Pilot VP on the way thanks to Pam Braun. I like the idea of the click mechanism but sometime I would like to have a Parker 51. Right now I do not know enough about the different model Parker 51's and I might make a poor choice unless I bought one from someone here at FPN. Someday I can add a 51 to my collection and perhaps some other choices. Of course this will all be in the interest of better note taking :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi from the St. Louis area (a bit south, actually)

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar.

The first orders a beer, the second half a beer, the third 1/4 of a beer...

The bartender says "You guys are a bunch of jerks!" and draws 2 beers.

I can't help it, I like this joke!

Welcome aboard the FPN Flyer! :D I might recommend a Pelikan M600 or M800 series as your next purchase. Excellent pen, and very smooth writer. Likewise, the nib is very firm, not like soft butter. I love my M800 dearly.

Sincerely yours,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
