Hi,

Since it seems to be the custom with this group I guess I should introduce myself.

I live in eastern Kansas (with my wife of 33 years and 3 cats) and work in the Map Library at the University of Kansas. In addition to accumulating pens I read a lot of mysteries and SF and tinker with old Macintosh computers. Those things along with keeping up an 1899 house seem to take up more hours than there are in the day.

Though this will be my first active participation in a pen group I am not new to the joys of the fountain pen. I began accumulating pens in the 80's, just before the hobby really took off. As prices rose and the supply at flea markets and antique malls shrank I drifted away, only occasionally stopping by a mall or store for a quick look.

A year or two ago I stumbled on the Usenet forum and from there found some of the other internet pen groups. This rekindled the fires and I started visiting eBay and reading message from several groups. Don't quite know what it is about this group but it is really the first one I have felt at home with. So - here I am.

Oh, yes. My favorite pen (today) - Lamy 2000. Most recent acquisitions - several early model Sheaffer touchdowns inclluding a couple of Tuckaways.

Thanks,

Alex

Welcome to FPN, Alex.

Please feel free to post pics of the furkids any time. :) We love furkids here. Mine is of the canine persuasion. Well, she *looks* like a dog but acts more like a cat, including climbing on window ledges.

Libraries and FPs go well together, IMO. And maps! Love maps. Hubby and I publish wargaming software and of course this means lots of maps stacked up. I someday hope to get him a really nice globe. He loves them but hasn't had one since childhood.

ah well... i've got to get back to packing up books but welcome again and I'm glad you feel comfy here. This is a classy bunch of folks - as is the pen community in general.

Guest Denis Richard

Welcome Alex :)

I'm very glad to hear that you like the atmosphere of the group. As KCat pointed, FP people are nice folks... most of them

I'd like to see those Sheaffers. I have a sweet tooth for them too, since I adopted several Tirumph "nibed" model..

Welcome to FPN, AlexS! :D

Yes, it is a friendly, classy group of people here. Lots of fun and information, and it's all archived...No need to worry about information rolling off the last page

I am a Sheaffer afficianado (as my self-created title says) so I can see why you would be interested in acquiring them. I have heard so many great things about the Lamy2000. It is one of my modern hope-to-buy-someday fountain pens!

Sheaffer touchdown, next vintage on my list.

I think there's a thread around here with pics of the cats and dogs of various members. Find it in chatter I think, if its still there. If you post to it, it will pop it up in the priority list, and others will see it. Nice thing about this board...

I like either, my wife rescues cats so we usually average 6 in the house (max ever was 12). and 1 standard poodle.

Welcome! This is the most comfy group you'll find on the internet methinks..

Yep, it's the thread in the Chatter forum entitled "Can't let the dogs have all the publicity" :)

Thanks to all for the welcoming posts. As soon as I get the digital camera sorted out and read up on how to post pictures to the board I will show off the furkids. Maybe also some of the pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
