Safari or Studio

Hello,

I was trying to choose between the Lamy Safari and Studio. Is there any difference in writing quality? I have read many people love the Safari and after many years and many different pens they come back to it. I haven't wrote with either pen, and I'm trying to see if the difference is just in looks, or also in writing smoothness etc...

Thanks a lot!

Both are remarkably smooth. I have fine (Studio), medium and broad(Safari) nibs and all glide over the paper laying down a nice wet line with a light touch. The Studio is a higher quality pen--heavier and it fits my hand a little better, so I enjoy writng with it more than the Safari. I think I remember reading that the nibs are the same between the two models. You can't go wrong with either at the prices.

The nibs are indeed the same and I switch my nibs back and forth between my Studio and Safari(s)... Like BobR said, what you're paying for is the difference in dressing and feel.

Replacement nibs are cheap and plentiful - I'm running a 1.1 Italic on my Studio right now (coming from EF, then F nibs).

Love the pens - reliable, functional...

May I ask where can I buy replacement nibs? I have a Safari coming to me in EF and I would like different sizes as well. Thanks!

They are the same as the nibs on the Lamy Scribe calligraphy pens.

Betty-

I've purchased extas from both Pendemonium and Swisher Pens (usual disclaimer) - I've seen them for sale from LamyUSA as well:

I'm rather enjoying my 1.1 Italic at the moment :)

My opinion?

First, the nibs are the same, as is the filling system, so the writing quality should be identical.

The Safari is one of the best FP's on the market today. Durable, functional, high quality. Industrial strengh, functional clip that will clip onto any fabric, coat, or bag. Triangular-shaped section makes it very comfortable. (I use them unposted 90% of the time) Wide choice of cheap nibs, easily user-switchable at will. Lots of different colors. The only downside is that it's not a very formal pen, although the Vista or the Al-sheathed All-Stars are a bit fancier.

The Studio is the dress-up version of the Safari. Very cool, elegant clip. Three versions and two price ranges. I had a black one, but the metal section was too slippery for me. I've got a SS one coming, which should more to my liking. Also the clip is more attractive than functional for many uses, although it holds fine. The clip's gripping surface is just a bit small, esp vs. the huge capacity and holding power of the Safari.

Not to change the subject too much, but . . . what is there to be gained by spending a few more dollars to purchase a Lamy 2000?

I know that the Lamy 2000 has a piston filler, but I guess the question is whether the extra money is money well spent.

Sean, between the Lamy Studio and the Lamy 2000, the Lamy 2000 wins hands down. As has been previously noted, the nibs on the stainless Lamy Studio and the Lamy Safari are identical, so they pretty much write the same. There is also the Lamy Studio (Palladium) with a gold nib, but I personally couldn't distinguish much difference in writing to warrant paying more for the palladium version over the stainless version. Now, the Lamy 2000 has a a gold nib with a little flex to it and as a piston filler it holds a ton of ink. In my opinion, it's definitely worth the extra money over the Studio.

Ok, thanks for all the opinions!

I am now stuck with a decision to make between the following pens:

Lamy Safari, Hero 100, and Parker 45.

All about the same price.

Betty,

do you really need replacement nibs?

lamyusa sels them (section with nib) for $15

and isellpens sells whole safari for $19

Hmm, I am not sure that the grip of the Lamy 2000 suits everyone.

If I wanted to go for another gold nibbed Lamy (I already have a 2000), I would look at the Accent Brilliant. Their nibs are very nice (same as the Lamy Lady and Persona, I think) and it is a beautiful pen.

Yes, it is a C/C filler, but I don't see that as a real disadvantage.

I just wanted the calligraphy nib, so I purchased that nib for $11 on swisherpens. I know it's just an $8 difference for a brand new pen, but I don't really want to fill up my pencil case. It's already overflowing to the brim now and I think I need to sell some soon. I don't use a lot of them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
