Hello from Bedfordshire, UK

I'm a new member, though my interest in fountain pens goes back many years.

I try to resist collecting - sort of started around 15 years ago, but bought an expensive pen to try and stop me lusting after more and more pens. That worked for several years, but just now I'm getting the urge to start accumulating more inky things!

I have two parkers which I do not have a clue what they are - have posted a note in the Parker forum cos someone there had a picture of a pen just like mine, a Parker 25, two Parker 15s (?), Parker 75 Thuya, Parker Premier Chinese Lacquer, four Waterman Lady Charlottes (red, blue, green and a sort of dark red), and that expensive pen - a Pelikan Toledo.

I don't need a Conway Stewart Dinkie, do I?

No-one needs a Conway Stewart Dinkie!

Ray, how can you say FPN is a friendly place and be so disparaging about my particular passion?!

Maybe Fafnir and yourself should look at some of the recent pictures I have posted of pens from my collection on the Conway Stewart forum. Then read why they are important in the history of British pens in general and CS in particular.

Then maybe you can explain to us why nobody needs a Conway Stewart Dinkie! The pre-war examples really are beautiful little pens and surprisingly practical to use - and before you ask, my everyday writing pen is indeed a Dinkie - pictured here!

Hello and welcome Fafnir to FPN! You can already see from the banter why we often refer to the place as the FPNuthouse ;) . Must ask - is there some special meaning to your username? Looks interesting. Hope to see you around, and, if you get the chance, show us your collection.

Thanks for the welcome. Fafnir comes mainly from the Stevie Smith poem Fafnir and the Knights - it appealed to me. Fafnir is a sweet dragon (unlike his namesake in the Norse mythology which portrays Fafnir as a rather nasty dragon). However, nasty Fafnir he got engaged to Brunhilde, a valkyrie, and on another (motorcycle) forum I used to get called Brunhilde because the guys there thought I was a bit - um - woman warrior-like. I'm not, they don't know me well - but the added link appealed and I've used the name Fafnir elsewhere too :)

Wow, wow, wow! I'll just sit back and lust after another of Andy's pens.

Want or need a Dinkie, now there's a question. I'll admit the second CS I bought was a Dinkie, but it doesn't get that much use because the nib is just too fine even for my liking.

Fafnir, welcome to the forum and you definitely need a Conway Stewart of some sort in your Collection :)

Thanks Carrie, I'm glad you like the pen.

Now I'll fess up and tell you that it is actually a hybrid of bits and pieces (a 540 barrel with the cap from a 548 and a nice ball clip from yet another Dinkie whose number I can't remember). Thus it is an ideal pen to use for a writer, as I'm not taking anything out of the collection and its sales value to another collector is approximately nil! The various parts spent some years just sat in my spares box until I decided it would be more productive to turn it into a usable pen rather than sit and wait for the missing parts to turn up!

Guess I may bump into you at the Pen Show - I'll be the one signing cheques with a small pen!

Welcome Fafnir,

Nice set of Parkers, no you don't NEED a CS Dinky, what you need is a Parker "51" and if you want a small one get the Demi and if you want a small expensive one get a Parker "51" Demi Vac in Mint condition.

Problem Solved!! :eureka:

Very tempting offer, Peachez, I'll have to think about it........

At least somebody likes my pen, obviously Jim is not so keen. When did they ever produce Parker 51s (even Demis) in purpose designed suede wallets,

in leather wallets with matching penknives or in sets with gloriously coloured silk lanyards? Made between 70 and 80 years ago but still practical today!

Anyway, Fafnir, I apologise for using your introductory post to defend my precious Dinkies against the Philistines. To return to your original question, I still think you need at least one in your collection!

I think I need a Dinkie in my collection now. You are a bad influence.

Wicked, wicked man.

The one in your first photo was gorgeous.

Greetings, O Fafnir!

Verily glad art we who do wallow amidst the inkpots and pluck fountain pens from behindst our ears, to make thine acquaintance! Forsooth, long may thine ink run wetly!

...Or something like that.

Andy, nice to know what that pen is made up from, I think it makes a wonderful mix and I'm absolutely in love with the colours - makes my blue marble Dinkie look a real little plain Jane.

I have a 51 Demi Aeromatic Cocoa on its way.... and a 51 Vac full size as well....

I've not tried the 51s but after reading so much about them on this site I had to have a couple for myself.

The Dinkie will have to wait

Ah, thank goodness I can resist the CS lure.

But I think JS' Parker 51 suggestion is tempting!

And to think that nib on his avatar is on a 50 year old pen!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
