The South West Pen Show 2009 - Bristol UK

The first ever South West Pen Show is just 11 weeks away!!

Yes the first pen show of 2009 is taking place at the Bristol Hilton on Sunday 22nd. February. This show is based on the same concept as the Midland show which was held in Lichfield in June of this year, in other words it will be small and intimate to encourage plenty of socialising! Size wise it will be bigger than the Midland show but not as big as the Northern. Tables are selling fast with 20 booked already. Most of the major UK vintage pen dealers will be joining us. The venue is great for visitors coming by car, not so good if you are using other forms of transport.

To try and help promote the social aspect we are going to issue passes at the door showing that the wearer is an FPN member along with their FPN name and their home town/city so at long last we will hopefully all recognise one another and have a great time. This is what it will look like (but not so big!):

2009 should be a good year for pen shows with a total of four scheduled, heres the schedule:

THE SOUTH WEST PEN SHOW Bristol 22nd. February 2009 - Organised by Jeremy Collingridge and myself

THE NORTHERN PEN SHOW Lytham 26th April 2009 - Organised by Alan Lloyd

THE MIDLAND PEN SHOW Lichfield 14th June 2009 - Organised by Jeremy Collingridge and myself

THE LONDON WRITING EQUIPMENT SHOW 4th. October 2009 - Organised by the Writing Equipment Society

Jeremy and I hope to have a series of four small, intimate pen shows by 2011 so we need another two locations so if you have any suggestions let me know.

Regards

I will be there the Saturday afternoon/evening......anyone else?

I'm staying only 5 mins walk from the Hilton so would be up for a meet for a drink/meal/both!

I'm booked in at the Hilton and will be arriving Saturday afternoon. It will be nice to meet up with FPN members for a drink or meal. Anyone else planning to arrive on Saturday?

I can be at the Hilton in about 25 minutes from my place but will see how the plans for the weekend go. There are other factors to take into account...

Is this show open to all? With new and vintage pens on sale and on show?

I'm pretty close to Bristol and could pop over to the city for a browse!

I'd like to be there, money is the chief object right now.

Hi,

You are less than an hour away, it would be worth you coming just for the social aspect of the show. If you see anything that you like you can always make a note of it and contact the dealer after the show. Try and get there I think its going to be a good one.

Hi Ian

In your original post you ask for suggestions as to other locations. I have to say I've always forund the 'Northern' pen show to be a bit of a misnomer..... living just outside of Newcastle which is a good 3 hours drive it seams more like the 'North West' show.

Perhaps a 'Northern' show that was closer to the east coast ? Or even one that was perhaps in say somewhere like Berwick - a 'Borders' pen show (leaves open room for sponsership deal with Borders bookshops?). That would be then easier for those on the east coast from Yorkshire to Edinburgh to get to ?

Just a suggestion :)

Cheers

Hi John

A pen show in 'God's own country' - now you're talking! Newcastle would be an interesting venue, great for a weekend trip. I was brought up just down the coast in a small coal mining/fishing village called Whitburn and a lot of my family come from South Shields so it would be like going home for me!

Thanks for the suggestion John we'll take a look at some venues up there.

Regards

Ian

I DO wish I could join you all, but I will be up in Newcastle on the 21st and then Scunthorpe on the Sunday for my in-laws' 62nd wedding anniversary.

Well, this time next week the first ever South West Pen Show will be over and we'll be getting ready for the Northern

We've got a good range of dealers coming along including two of the UKs foremost Conway Stewart experts, Sarj and the Sarj Army will be with us. Laurence Oldfield of Pen Repair book fame and John Sorowka (I am NOT a Nibmeister ;) ) will be there to share their technical expertise, I'm sure that Laurence will be bringing copies of THE Pen Repair book for sale ( I hope so, because I've run out of stock :gaah: ) and John will have some of his big Indian eye droppers with him. Brian Toynton and Charles Whitehead will be with us along with MK Pens, Retro 51, Mike Selway, Graham Hogg, Worcester Pens (will Brian have his new piston filler????), W.E.S. and of course me (Cathedral Pens) and my partner in crime Jeremy Collingridge so you'll have plenty of pens to play with and hopefully buy! Along with pens I'll have the Waterman book (Max Davis & Gary Lehrer) and the Mabie in America book (David Moak) Ann will of course be there with the Diamine ink complete, no doubt, with inky fingers!

I'll be in the Hilton bar from around 7:00pm (hopefully) on Saturday so hopefully a few of us can get together for a drink etc. Let me know if you'll be there on the Saturday evening.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week and lets hope that the new entry badges work so we'll all spot one another!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
