Ohasido beauty

Hi guys,

I recently received my second Ohasido pen and decided to start a thread to show the two pens i have. It has taken me about 5 months to find and buy both of these pens since they don't show up for sale often. There is not a lot of information about the company online but Russ Stutler has written a nice article about Mr. Uehara and Ohasido pens that provides information. Here is a link to the article:

In addition, and thanks to Taki and Stan there is a very interesting video showing Mr. Uehara at work in his small appartment/workshop in Sendai. From our understanding the video was made by the education department of Sendai. Here is the link to that:

Both of the pens i have are urushi lacquered. The long black one measures 16cm capped. It is a very comfortable pen to use for long periods of time and the urushi coating is shiny and beautiful. The pen has a 14K single tone S-F nib, that is made by Sailor. It is a dream to write with. It fills via Sailor cartridges or Sailor converter. The pen came in its simple Paulownia wood box, all the paperwork and a nice suede leather case. i got lucky with it because the seller also included a spare section with a brand new S-M nib so if i want to change nib i can just exchange the sections. The seller told us that the pen was purchased in 2002. I really like the design of the pen. While the cap is almost flat top the barrel is finished in a nice torpedo shape. It is a lightweight pen and the balance is perfect.

The shorter pen measures 13.5cm. It is executed in a beautiful dark blue and black urushi pattern that is pretty abstract like passing clouds. It reminds me of the night sky. I love the flat end design used in the pen. The colors on it are relatively dark blues and black but once the sun catches the pen it is a different story as you can see in the photos. The pen has a thick 18K solid gold band right above the section that adds to its looks but also makes the balance excellent. The 14K S-F (soft fine) glides on paper with no hesitation even after the pen sits uncapped for over 10 minutes.

The pen came with a very nice leather case for it with the name of the maker/shop on it.

I can go on talking for a long time about these two gorgeous pens but i will let some photos do the extra talking. I am very happy to have these two pens and will definitely remain in my collection.

The pictures and ideas for the backgrounds were all Jade's work :happyberet:

These are very beautiful pens Nikolaos - thanks for sharing. Although I have love writing for many years I am new to a lot of this and have not yet got into collecting pens - but I can see the attraction. Forgive my ingorance, but would you have to look for these pens in a dealers shop? I would love to find out more about pens from this area of the world!

Very nice Nikolaos, thanks for sharing. I like the shape of the long black one. The blunt cap is a subtle but cool change from most of the cigar-shaped pens out there.

Wonderful looking pens. Kudos to Jade for getting the grasshopper to climb the black Ohasido. That's one impressive trick. ;)

Thanks for your kind comments guys.

I won both pens in auctions through yahoo JP. The images that the sellers provided in both auctions were really bad but still i went ahead and took a chance. There was pretty heavy bidding on both of them. It did pay off in the end

Here are three we had earlier this year. Great pens. Have extreme regrets on letting the one on the left go.

Beautiful pens Stan,

I love the one on the left! The one in the middle looks like the one Kevin sold a few months ago on FPN. Thanks for the great photo

Hi Nikolaos!

You are indeed correct about the Ohasido in the middle; I purchased this pen from him and absolutely love the smoothness of the nib, just right ink flow and the sublime beauty of the pen

Roger

May you and those you love, be always blessed with peace and never ending joy.

Anyone know if ohasi do make their own hardware like hakase does. And does anyone know what the hardware is made out if (I.E- hakase uses beaten gold).

Thanks. It's almost impossible to find any information on these pens.

Without being 100% sure, I think Ohasi-do make/made their own hardware. That being said all their clips and bands are identical and I think same goes for the 18K thick gold bands used on some of the pens. I had a dozen Ohashi-do in my collection, now only 7 remain.

That's an interesting question Sblakers. I have 4 Hakase pens currently and the crafsmanship is top notch as I am sure most people that own Hakase think. The Ohasi-do I currently own are also top notch in terms of craftsmanship but I have also seen a few with minor flaws. That being said, Hakase is a more of an established business, with it's own premises , shop etc.

As far as I can tell Mr. Uehara was making Ohasi-do in a tiny apartment, with a foot-operated lathe, more or less a one-man operation. There was a video made some years ago about Mr. Uehara, by a Japanese TV station but sadly i can't find it any longer.

Also another point to consider is materials:

The majority of Ohasi-do pens are ebonite. Also some nice translucent acrylics were used, but the core is ebonite. Some of the ebonite pens were finished by Mr. Uehara (smooth or chased ebonite), and others (I think) were sent to artisans he worked with for lacquering. I am fairly certain that he was not doing the urushi application and maki-e decoration by himself. The pens I have noticed minor flaws on were pens that has urushi applied on them. All ebonite and acrylic pens i have seen and handled are top notch.

Hakase uses all kinds of different and exotic materials, and everything is finished in-house so the control is tighter.

Thanks nikolaos, that was very helpful information. I actually just bought a used ohasi do, it's similar to your pen with the two gold bands( cap and body) it was described as looking black in the picture but when light is shined on it- it turns a brownish color. - in assuming this is urushi ? The pen has a flat top cap and torpedo body. Thanks again for your help, I own a hakase with one on the way I was curious about these ohasi do pens so when one came up I had to pull the trigger.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
