(We began selling fountain pens online exactly 10 years ago, in March 1996).

Do you remember which was your favourite pen in March 1996?

Pelikan M800 green with a fine nib.

I had and used the same pen as I still use today. A red marble Duofold Centennial with XF nib.

I also had a Sheaffer Targa, but did not have a happy experience with it and eventually it went the way of all flesh - I did not shed a tear.

My favorite pen 10 years ago was the same pen I use almost everyday today, the Parker "51" aeromatice. Now I have multiple "51"s and I alternate.

I know, I'm boring. Been married to the same woman since college, too.

Ron

Nice! :D

Me too: Same pen ten years ago, same woman since college!

But, just in case someone feels like reporting this, pen and woman are different from Ron’s... :P

The pen is a black Sheaffer (new) Crest with gold-plated cap and medium nib. It was so good I thought it would be my last. In fact, it wasn’t, but it still is my dearest.

Kees! Haven't heard from you for a while, mate (or perhaps more accurately, I must have missed all your recent posts  :D )

I was also another Bic-er 10 years ago, sadly. I would have had 10 more years of wonderful life had I discovered FPs by then! (And yes, I too am another who's been with the same [but different ;) ] woman since university - hmmmm.. I wonder how many of us here are like this...)

Hi, Grasshopper! I have been around (mostly reading).

Different wives ... also different college days? We got married in 1976... ;)

I would have been using a Cross (splurged: sterling silver) rollerball which I still have and carry in my briefcase as a back-up, MB 146 FP, and my MB pen/pencil set (almost never used now). The Mont Blanc's were given to me over successive special events (birthday, anniversary, etc.) by my wife.

Although it was certainly around, the internet was still pretty much in its infancy. I would have to say, my interests have been impacted by the info on here ('opened by eyes'). Plus, in 1996, my focus was certainly different then....job, school, young family, new home, etc.

Neat subject....nice to think back.

10 years ago, that's only 1996, it was a Parker Duofold International with Penman green and which, by then, had a replacement nib. I had dropped it, nose down, and tried to straighten the nib with little success. Parker gave me a discount on the new nib in exchange for the bent one. Good service. The nibs were Fine, but didn't take long to wear to medium. Eventually the cap top was broken and fixed with two pack filler, the plating on the section rings rotted away and, by the time the second nib became too worn, I lost it. Regrettable.

With today's computers my everyday pen gets nothing like the same use. Regrettable too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
