Onoto no16 cap question

I got an Onoto no 16 from the NYC penshow this year. It had some ink flow problems, so I recently had it fixed by Ron Z. Last night I was looking through the Lambrou books and realized that the clip and tassie (?) appear to have been hijacked from a 5601 model. A little closer inspection confirmed my suspicion on this, it's clear that the clip ring is a little too wide for the end of the barrel.

Not a big deal (I didn't pay much for the pen and it's a great smooth semiflex writer) but at some point I'd like to track down the proper clip and tassie/jewel/whatever (pardon my ignorance  ) for this model. Does anyone know what a good source would be? Onoto's don't turn up all that often in the US penshows - NYC is the best bet since it attracts a fair amount of overseas dealers. But with no NYC pen show this year :( I don't even have that option to browse for a replacement clip.

TIA,

weepstah.

Hi Weepstah,

Not only will the clip ring be a little wide the #16 clip and tassie or clip stud are different.

From your description you have an earlier clip and flattop stud whereas the #16 should be domed with the "art deco" style pattern (similar to the Chrysler building)

Pics attached for reference.

Gary,

That's it exactly. The original clip was replaced with a flattop clip and tassie and clip stud at some point. Any advice on where to find a "parts" cap to harvest the clip et. al?

TIA

Sorry no idea where you will find parts. The #16 is later than the 5601 so there may be a few floating around. The #5601 button fillers are more in demand.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
