Excellent pens Tom - you should be very pleased. They are usually not to hard to resack, and make great writers. I don't think the green set is actually a set - I think the Pencil pairs with a different pen - but they still go nice together. I have a couple of these coming to the market someday, 1 in lever-fill, 1 in plunger.

Enjoy

John

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

Always looking for pens by Baird-North, Charles Ingersoll, and nibs marked "CHI"

Johnny's right. The pencil in that pair is a Craftsman. The thin gold band marks it as such.

Nonetheless, Griz, you made another great score. You think the folks selling pens at the bay would be on to you by now.

:P :P :P As long as I keep giving them money they ain't gonna stop me :P :P :P

I have been pretty lucky though... I figure worst case scenario, I get my money back and then some after resacking if I don't like the way they write...

I think I actually bid on the Red Stripe :D Missed the ending and didn't want to burn a snipe on it. I probably would have been out bid though. I tend to look for the really cheap ones that need some work done. :D

Best use of a pen:

Not true. Right at the end of World War II, Sheaffer brought out a new line, and that "wire" band appeared on several models. The pen I show here is a Sovereign II:

The Craftsman name appeared on several different pens through the years; it first showed up shortly before the war on a very ordinary-looking Balance with a 1935-style flat-ball humped clip instead of the streamlined clip that better models were then wearing. The only meaningful way to ID a Craftsman, no matter what it looks like, is to examine the nib; until 1952 and the advent of the Tip-dip Touchdown pens, the Craftsman was fitted with a No. 33 nib. This pen is a true Craftsman:

The same pencil might go with more than one pen model, so there's no real way to tack the name "Craftsman" on Griz's pencil. But that pencil definitely didn't come out of Fort Madison with that pen. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
