...Dip nibs

... Pressing a small bit of wax behind my dip nibs (about half-way under the breather hole & 3/8" long) seems to be working to allow the pen to hold more ink so I can dip less. I've been writing letters with these nibs all morning and (so far) this seems to be an ultra-simple, cheap way to make a dip pen feed.

I was experimenting with a makeshift wax feed on my dip pen and at first I thought it was working so I posted about it. Then I realized it WASN'T working so I erased my post and fled in embarrassment.

There were companies which made dip pens with feeds. For example, Esterbrook (some nibs were specifically made solely for dip pens, others were compatible with dip pens but could also be used in fountain pens), Sengbusch, Carter, Sheaffer (the Fineline Safeguard Desk set) and Bert M. Morris Co. (the Morriset Desk set).

I have some of my favorite dip nibs fit into old vintage pens with feeds so get more ink without dipping that way. My experiment this morning was simply pushing wax behind the nib as a makeshift feed on an old Victorian dip pen. At first it worked (hence the original post), then it didn't which was when I edited my post to the embarassed "...." -- I'm now testing a different dip pen and nib with another simple wax feed -- it sort of works, sort of doesn't. :headsmack:

Use a piece of tinfoil around the bottom to add a reservoir, they sell clip on ones for calligraphy which are about the same.

If I knew how to use fotoshop.

You'd be able to see the hand turned Ebonite Holders set-up with feeds and Nibs.

Use your imagination.

I have these being made now in India and expect delivery within 3 weeks.

Ray...Yes somewhere around $22.00

jbb...At the moment No flex. It would entail me sending flex nibs to India and having them installed.

Nice Fines and Mediums though.

That is cool! Have you tried 'em?

How long can you go between dips?

I am relying on the cat-whisker feed described on FPN earlier. It works very well but you have to get the coil spacing right, otherwise it with be too wet or you won't be able to write the last drop out of the reservoir.

I'm not sure how the wax idea compares to that but I like the ink flow I'm getting so far.

I have a very heavy hand. I can get a good paragraph or so out of a good long dip.

I'm photographically challenged but here's a scan. That white blurr is the wax on the backside of the nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
