Northern Pen Show

Recommended Posts

I know it's a while off yet, but I was wondering if any of our resident British contingent were planning on making a trip to the Northern Pen Show? I'm hoping to head along to it and it will be my first visit to a Pen Show. I'd love to hear any experiences that people might have from previous shows.

Hi Carrie,

The Northern Pen Show should be well worth a visit, I will certainly be going and have been up there every year since it launched in Blackpool / Lytham. Last year seemed a little quieter than before but there was still a decent 'buzz' about the place. It even seems to tempt a few dealers from the South to venture up further than Watford! Obviously it doesn't attract the same number of international sellers as London but if you are primarily interested in British pens this is not necessarily detrimental.

Get up there early if you can to pick up the best offerings. Car parking (early doors at least) is easy, there is a handy public car park almost across the road from the Hotel.

Hi Carrie,

I would like to make it up there, but as it is a bit of a trek for me from Swindon, might have to combine it with something business.

It'll be nice to put a few faces to names. I'll have to keep an eye out for that lovely Dinkie being used for cheque signing so that I'll know if I' ve spotted Andy. Ray, don't you dare try to sell me anymore ink - I've got enough, honest! Jim, I know what you mean about distance, but I'm disappointed that I won't have the chance to eye up any of your 51s.

Click on the link to find out all about it. It's in Lytham next month. Or if you want something closer to home you'll have to wait for the London Pen Show :)

Pen Show ? What's a pen show ?.

In New Zealand a pen show would be a collection of Bics in a plastic bag.

You lucky little Vegemites....

Please do a write up if you go..I would love to know what's about, on offer etc..

Going off to sulk quietly in a corner.. :(

Note to self:

Do not spend all money on ink. Do not spend all money on ink. Do not spend all money on ink.

Just read Ray's e-mail about the new Noodler's that will be on sale at the Show.

Carrie,

I am trying to 'arrange' a business trip for the following Monday, so I will need to travel up the day before won't I?

Not there yet but working on it

Well, I can now say that I've met Ray (and got some more ink which I will review at some point). I had a good time looking round and resisted the temptation to buy a Vacumatic or Parker 61 or any vintage Conway Stewart. I did come home with one new pen though. At lunchtime there was a raffle drawn from the entry tickets to win a new Conway Stewart pen, so they announced the winner as ticket 581 or the nearest numbered ticket in the room. The pen was won by a lady with ticket 585 - I had 586 :(

Anyway, even if I didn't win a new pen I had fun and if the photos I just took are any good (camera with an almost dead battery) then my new pen might make a guest appearance in the Conway Stewart forum :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
