Basildon Bond stationery - a post for the UK contingent

'Sadly, that's where the story ends. This brand is, along with pretty much everything else, not available in New Zealand (unless I want to pay a fortune to some faceless shipping agent).'

A quick trawl round the web appears to confirm this, a real dearth of stationery stores of The Goulet Pen Company and Cult Pens type in NZ. Do Kiwis not write letters? A gap in the market perhaps for an enterprising soul with a knowledge of paper, pens and personal stationery.

No, it appears Kiwis no longer write letters. I have been using fountain pens at school for over a year and nobody has noticed. However, my handwriting has been remarked upon - not that it is anything special, just ordinary cursive - but I guess that is more in surprise at actually seeing a handwritten piece of work.

As for enterprise, well, how many Kiwis (not that I am one) are members of this forum? A bare handful. Not necessarily that indicative. I have not seen anyone using a fountain pen in the 12 years I have been here until earlier this year when I noticed the Dean using a Lamy Vista.

Not even hobbits writing any more down there? That is just awful. :-)

Dear Ms. MiniMaupassant,

Thanks for the up-date. I got onto Basildon Bond back in my Oxford days. Every time I cross over to your side of the pond I make it a point to stock up on both paper & envelopes & carry it home in my hand luggage. Here at home in Almost Heaven -- West Virginia I keep a stock of good papers, Clairfontaine, Crane, Rhodia, G. Lalo Verge, Crown Mill, &c. However my personal favorite is always the Basildon.

Yours sincerely,

Minty

Update.

I found a small Post Office in Lybster, Caithness, Scotland, that still stocks Basildon Bond (paper and envelopes). Not only that but in a variety of shades. :bunny01:

My daughter now has a stock and so the tradition in our family continues.

Couldn't agree more with this thread. It's sensibly priced and just excellent fountain pen paper, even for low MPG vintage feeds! I bought my last batch of paper & envelopes from Rymans. I like that the letter paper has a cheat sheet you can pop underneath each leaf to keep your writing even.

If traveling to or through France I would suggest Carrefour for clairefontaine and own brand writing sets of fountain pen friendly paper in several colours with matching envelopes at very keen prices. Even at current exchange rates.

....and Rhodia webbies in A5 for 7-8 Euro.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
