Recommended Posts

Hi,

If anybody is traveling to the Los Angeles Pen Show this weekend, please come by and visit the Conway Stewart table.

I will have many samples and you can try out all our nib grades. I will also be show casing our Spring Maki-e Collection 2006 as well as our new Nightingale series.

LA is always a fun show, there are plenty of pens and many people to chat with.

Kind regards,

Mary Burke

Wow Mary,

What great looking pens. I've got my eye on an Ebonite Churchill but must save up, those Nightingale pens should even get my wife interested in FP's now.

I have only dealt with Conway Stewart UK by e-mail and they sent me the most luscious brochure with some of the best pen photographs I've ever seen.

BTW If Conway Stewart want to open an office in the Antipodes do let me know.

Best of luck for the show. Your co-moderator

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your response.

I have the new gloss brochure available as a PDF file. It is a great reference for models and the core color range.

The ebonite Churchill is available in either black chase or Woodgrain (Red Ripple). I personally feel the Woodgrain is stunning.

Oh Mary, Why do you tempt me so. The red ripple is stunning.

Would you be kind enough to e-mail me the *.pdf catalogue ?.

Best regards

Great, thanks for the brochure pdf, Mary, they have my pen on the cover! Well almost, mine has silver trimmings as opposed to gold (like Kelly, I'm not a gold lover).

I didn't know who you were when I came to the show last year, but I certainly appreciated the chance to try out some of the pens you had on display. For anyone contemplating the purchase of a CS, I highly recommend dropping by Mary's table. It might be your only opportunity to handle all the CS models and dip test the many different types of nibs available.

Aw, maaan!! Yet more talk of the coming show (and now, modern Conway Stewarts)! Push the knife deeper, why don't you??

Hello Mary! Any chance you need some help at the show? You do? Excellent. I'll PM my address to you so that you can courier the flight tickets to me in Malaysia. Thanks, Conway Stewart! :eureka: :bunny1: :bunny1: :bunny1:

Here's an image of the Bronze model 100. It is absolutely gorgeous!

I also feel this design is superb. The pen is crafted out of 18 carat solid gold, engraved and enameled.

There simply is not enough money to buy every design I like ... but it is sure fun seeing and handling these beautiful pens.

I once did a very quick estimate of how much it would cost to collect all the available finishes of say the 100. I think there are at least 20 regular finishes and perhaps anoother ten bespoke ones. Assuming a competitive retail price of $350 for the regulars and $425 for the bespokes, you end up with about $9000! :) Now multiply that by three if you add the Duro and the Churchill. Throw in a few special pens, and you are looking at well over $30,000

Hi,

Sorry to give you even more of a sticker price shock, but the numbers are a lot higher than that!

The model 100 is available in 15 core colors: Classic Black, Classic Claret, Classic Green, Flecked Amethyst, Lapis Blue, Lava, Marble Blue, Meteor, Nebula, Peppered White, Red Whirl, Sepia Blue, Shingle, White Whirl, Yellow Whirl.

There are also the three colors for the Garner edition (100 pens):

The White Casein limited edition (500 pens):

And then all these colors, regular and bespoke:

This would require one big wish list with lots of family and friends!

There are in excess of 55 colors -- and there are a few more that have not been published :)

The decision choices are a lot easier once the color has been chosen. You only have to choose between a piston fill or converter cartridge; and the nibs available are from Extra Fine, to Extra Broad, Italic Fine, Italic Medium and Italic Broad.

Kind regards,

Mary, I am not aware of any other manufacturer that has made so many colors available simultaneously for a single model. It is an interesting decision from a business point of view. Most manufacturers tend to release a few new finishes every year and discontinue the older ones. The Pelikan city series is one such example. I suppose each new release becomes a mini- marketing event grabbing a lot of attention, and the fact that each new model is available only for a short time might push some people to buy. But if the buying opportunity is missed, it is often missed for good as a number people will not settle for a used version of the model. With CS, the dizzying array of choices seems to remain available for a long time, giving people a chance to eventually buy that one finish they really like for a special occasion. I am not sure what all this means, but it seems noteworthy :) .

Hi Stylo,

I agree with you on the materials. Some are absolutely stunning to my eye, and I am sure there is a material there for everybody. Impressive number of choices!

Warm regards, Wim

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
