Greetings and Salutations

Hello All,

I'm not a neophyte to pens, but definitely a neophyte to fountain pens.

My first FP was a Pelikan that I bought in Germany in the mid 80's. In the late 80's I got a Mont Blanc 149 and never used it. In the late 90's I bought a Visconti Monte Carlo (flat top/mandarin yellow) and used it solely to sign Christmas cards.

Fast forward to about four weeks ago.. I decided to put the ballpoint in the mothballs and got the Mont Blanc 149 out. Yep, I like it.

Glad to be here and hope to learn a good bit. My main interests are in the pens I have and the possibility of buying a Delta 20th LE FP and possibly a Tibaldi. Other than that, I'm set. ;)

Welcome OSR,

You may think those are all the pens that you want to acquire, but stick around these parts for awhile and......

Kind regards,

Karin

Indeed. Welcome to the most enabling site in pendom! We'll fix that "I'm set" thing real quick like.

I was "set" with a Phileas, A Pelikan 200, and a Lamy Safari 6 years ago.

we won't discuss the # of pens I own now.

Hello OSR,

Very nice pens you have there already. Do you happen to know which Pelikan model yours is?

Oh, and if you think you're already set, it might be safer for you if you hadn't joined us here. ;) Next thing you know, you'll be blaming all of us for each new pen you buy from now on.   Just like another "Old" member of ours (isn't that right, Griz    )

Welcome to the Nuthouse, OSR. :D Hope you'll enjoy your time here.

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

I don't really know what number the Pelikan was.. I say was because I didn't own it for long. The pen was a smaller one and was bought in a "ballpoint/fp combo" at the Frankfurt airport.

The old MB 149 sure is a dandy writer. Oddly, the nib doesn't seem to have a marque denoting its size (of the nib).

Thanks for the kind regards and warm welcomes. :)

Welcome! Those definitely are some nice pens you have there. Just out of curiousity, what compelled you to purchase them in the first place? As someone who considers himself a user of fountain pens, as opposed to a collector, I would like to rebut the notion mentioned above that being on this forum will lead to your buying more and more pens. I would like to be able to rebut that, but I can't personally! I like to keep less than 10 pens - but I also love trying new pens, having currently 5 that I plan to keep until my demise. Anyway, I'm sure others would love to read about what drew you to FPs in the 1st place.

I had to grin while reading this thread. And I have to say that this sounds like an invitation to the beginnings of an ink addiction as well as the potential FP addiction you may be risking in here: "Visit "Inky Thoughts" and "Ink Reviews" frequently for vicarious fun..."

Welcome, OldSeaRock!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
