So which models should we be falling for and are there any duffers in this brand's range?

i'm sure we'll fix your lack of Pelikans before too long, Roger.

Thanks to the guys for taking on the moderatorship of this forum and making it possible.

Wonderful News.

I suggest they send each of us a Pelikan so we are "attracted" to their forum!

Andy

I'll take a Stockholm or Athens - fine nib please :P .

I am honored to become a co-modorator for this forum. Sorry I haven't posted but I have been gone the past week.

How about an M625 medium nib? This is great news.

That's a M400 White Tortoise. Definitely in my top 3 pens. The purpose of the plastic dog was to show the ivory white of the pen vs. the stark white of the plastic dog.

and it is the best reprsentative I have of my dog as she won't hold still for pictures with a pen in paw. :P

Thanks for that KCat!

I had a look and took a test write with a M800 in red stripe; very nice writer, with medium nib. Had a steady ink flow from dipping. It was 250GBP. However, I wasn't sure what to make of the construction. It was very light for a large pen but more disconcertingly, I thought the cap clip to feel insubstantial, as if it would break like brittle plastic (though thank goodness it didn't do that at the pen store! :P )

I found myself more impressed with the Cross Townsend in sterling silver on sale atg 68GBP and wrote a much wetter and enjoyable line. Mind you, the plastic feeder under the nib seemed a little off centre, as did the others stacked up behind the demonstrator. The gold tipped nibs were better fixed underneath.

Even so, I can see why the Pelikan is potentially superior: the nib IS its crowning glory and for that alone I could be tempeted, but you'd have to wax a bit more lyrical about Pelikans before I could commit to one :D

I have a Townsend and it is a good pen, indeed. But you'll find that any time I can mention my Pels... I will.

Ahh, well if the clip on the cap is metal then that helps answer my quality concerns. Will just have to look out for a M800 at a bargain price!

Thanks for that KCat.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
