Professional repairs to a vac filler.

I just got my hands on a brown striated OS Triumph vac filler with a rolled gold cap. There are several things that puzzle me about how this pen is put together. I cant't fathom how the piston rod is attached to the blind cap and the barrel has an inner sleeve in it which I have no idea how to remove. Basically, I'm not about to muck about with this because i think it's beyond my skill level. There is also a small ding in the cap which I don't have the tools or skill to deal with.

 

What I am inclined to do is either sell it 'as-is' or get it professionally repaired or get a quote for repairs and sell it along with "you can get it fixed here if you like". Anybody got any suggestions for a reliable person to undertake this sort of work?

da book explains the basic principle behind the sleeved vac-fil. the sleeveless one is harder to repair, if i recall what nathan tardif used to say. the sleeved version is my favorite, although it has lower ink capacity, the ink lasts longer because it is well insulated from evaporative losses.

 

i have not tried repairing these beasts. the most i have done is convert the sleeveless vac-fils into eyedropper fillers.

Sherrell Tyree (http://www.ink-pen.com/ ) repairs Sheaffer vac-fillers. She is a super-nice lady from whom I bought two pens last year......Nathan Tardif used to repair them, but he's now concentrating on his ink and other projects, so I don't believe he takes in pens for repair anymore (someone please correct me if I am wrong!) I think Rick Horne (the Southern Scribe) repairs them, too--he's at http://www.thesouthernscribe.com/

Update

 

OK, I got brave and took the pen almost apart w/o too much drama.

 

What I have to deal with now is the inner barrel and section assembly.

 

The problem is that the soft washer is torn and must be replaced but to do that I have to get the piston rod with hard backing washer out of the assembly. As far as I can see the section is too narrow to allow the washwer through which would mean I would have to remove the packing unit (which looks good) from the top of the inner barrel.

 

Any suggestions?

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
