Pen buying in Singapore

tt32003

Recommended Posts

See that there are quite a few people here from Singapore.

So where do you guys buy your pens in Singapore ?

Where to get a good price ?

I find that Pelikan tend to have favourable pricing in Singapore.

Pilot on the other hand is very expensive in Singapore.

The list price for the Vanishing point on pilot singapore website is actually SGD 235.9 while the list price on pilot international website is only US$139.

Popular seems to be the only selling it in Sg.

Anyone seen it elsewhere ?

Mustaffa ?Haven't been there for a long time. Btw are their pens at good prices ?

What about Montblanc ?

Heard that ADs will give 10% discount but the Montblanc boutiques will not do so.

I know of some specialised pen shops at Bras Basah, Peninsular Plaza, Funan etc.

Are they selling at cheaper price than department stores ?

The departmental stores do have 20% discounts on various brands on and off though.

I usually go to Fook Hing at Bras Basah and they are pretty decent with regards to service and discount. And they don't make me feel tiny because all I can afford for now is Lamy. Aesthetic Bay in Funan has stopped stocking up with Lamys. However, if you're looking for discounts, I think most shops are allowed to give 20% if they want. Had this strange experience where the shop next to Fook Hing (A watch shop with messy counter) tried to sell me a pen and all by cutting down the price. In the end, I managed to get my Lamy 2k XF at 20% off the listed price which was the same as it was listed in Kino. The problem is sourcing out at what price to bargain for though.

So how much did you pay for the Lamy 2k ?

About 25% off SGD220 ?

Retail price at Kino and most shops I have been to is $244 for Lamy 2K fountain. (including Fook Hing)

I paid about $190. Which now looking at the offers they have elsewhere, makes me very sheepish. Still.. the pen is amazing

In general, most pen brands aren’t cheaper in Singapore. Most pen shops and department stores sell at full retail.

Department stores sometimes have sales, but their pens are generally limited to Lamy, Sheaffer, Parker, Waterman and Acme. The stores don't really run their pen counters -- the distributors do.

If you’re looking for deals, it’s better to look online. Pens can be cheaper even after taking shipping into account. Try:

Pen Gallery - http://www.pengallery.com/

(they’ve a great store in brick-and-mortar store in KL too)

Pensinasia - http://www.pensinasia.com/

(Folks on FPN have also reported good dealings with PensinAsia too.)

Especially with the Lamy 2000. Why spend S$240+ in a shop here when you can get it for just under US$100 at Pen Gallery or Pam Braun?

If you'd like to try a physical store, I've a list of pen shops on my faq that might help:

http://strangeknight.wordpress.com/fountai...-singapore-faq/

Mustafa Centre is a good place to buy pens, but only if you know what you want. No service whatsoever there.

Pelikan - prices here not really better. Try Art Friend (Bras Basah Complex, 2F, or Ngee Ann City 4F), but selection limited. Also try Mustafa :)

Pilot - pen shops like Aesthetic Bay and Fook Hing will have them I think. Sorry, but am not familiar with the prices...

EDIT: Ah, just guessed that "AD" = authorised distributor :)

Bah! There's nothing to be ashamed about being able to afford only Lamy pens. A pen is a pen is a pen, and Lamy makes really good ones.

Any shopkeeper who tells you or indicates otherwise really doesn't deserve your business.

Aesthetic Bay in Funan has stopped stocking up with Lamys.

Hi Readymade,

Thank you for the faq!

Yeah..I did ask him a few weeks back and he said he was thinking of stopping his stock of lamys because he said they were getting common place and showed me a tray full of safaris.

Lin Kong Watch and Pen right? I used to get my Lamy nibs from there (uh, don't ask them to change the nibs for you).

They're willing to sell you converters from other pens too.

The brick and mortar shops to buy my drool pens would be Fook Hing. Better still I would find a reason to go to Kuala Lumpur and visit Pen Gallery. I got my M1000, M800, Sailor 1911, Nakaya from them.

As for Popular and Kinokuniya, only MSRP prices are given so no bargains can be found there.

Mustafa is good only for cheap pens. The expensive pens you buy are usually missing the original presentation boxes. I found that out to my huge regret when I bought my MB149 from them. No inking is allowed too.

I would avoid patronizing shops that sells luxury watches and some pens. Most of them think you are into branded goods and limited editions. In their minds, sky's the limit.

Another important consideration is after sales service as usually the more expensive pens are likely to give trouble. That include Lamy 2K, Aurora Optima, Stipula, M1000 which I bought. Keep your receipts and prepare to 'bang table'. The local Lamy distributor quoted 2 months to replace a faulty nib. You have less trouble with shops like Pen Gallery and Aesthetic bay who value your custom and who have replacement stocks in hand.

Finally you can always go on-line and buy from nibmeisters like Richard Binder who have ready stocks of custom nibs for Pilot VP and Pelikan pens.

I bought my Pelikan m400 at Robinsons last weekend.

They were having 20% discount plus I'll get another 5% off the bill when it comes as I used Robinsons card.

So it's even cheaper than Pan gellery.

Went to the sale by watches of switzerland at Hyatt Hotel last weekend and saw quite a few Omas, Dunhill, Cartier pens at 40-50% discount.

Cheapest around S$290 after discount.

Thought those prices should be fair for such brands but didn't buy as I was not familiar with them.

Walked down to Robinsons and bought the Pelikan.

Oh btw Takashimaya selling Cross Townsend lacquer fountain pen (discontinued models, in either red or green colour) at only S$200 now.

And for popular most household in Singapore should have a popular discount card which entitle you to 10% off pen.

If you print out the NDP coupon (valid till end Sept), can get 15% storewide or 20% at Harris (the Suntec branch has quite a lot of pens).

I bought a bottle for S$22, so USD20 seems a bit too much. I got mine from a shop in the basement level of Raffles City, but they only have a few colours. I've seen them at Fook Hing(Bras Besah) though.

Looking to exchange ink samples! Available: Noodler's Bulletproof Black, Noodler's 54th Massachusetts, Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses, Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher, Noodler's Operation Overlord Orange

@plinius: are you referring to the Colours of the Earth series?

Price has gone up :( NBC in the basement of Raffles City has them at S$25 a bottle. Think similar prices at Fook Hing and Aesthetic Bay...

Art friend selling the discontinued Pelikan new classic lacquer pen really cheap.

At S$39.90 can't get a cheaper pelikan with 14k nib.

They also sell an aluminium Pelikan with steel nib (unknown model) at S$20.

Anyone know what model is it ?

Sounds like the Future, a school pen similar to the Pelikano. Is it the one shown here? I didn't know the New Classic had a gold nib, but that's an excellent price for a gold-nibbed pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
