I have seen on one or two occasions, Relief nibs in a Ford pen (one was a #4 Relief nib in a large Ford), but not the other way around. Relief pens should always have a Relief nib in them.

Thanks Brian, I wondered as much as I thought the reputation of Relief pens were their nibs.

Any idea why they were called 'Relief' pens?

"Relief" actually refers to the style of cut. Whereas some would call them oblique, Relief are a more subtle angle, I believe 7-8 degrees, as opposed to the 15 or so obliques are.

It is doubtful Esterbrook ever put any other nib in their Relief pens, as they were advertised as the pen with the "Famous" Relief nib.
