FS: Bausch & Lomb illuminated Coddington magnifier

Is your view a little one-sided? Most illuminated hand magnifiers throw light from a single bulb (LED or incandescent). They light up only one side of the thing you're looking at, and there's often a lot of glare. That's not what you need if you're trying to see a nib tip or find hairline cracks in a cap lip: there are problems with shadows, and the glare makes hot spots that can hide flaws.

Now there's a better way. A Coddington lens combines two optical elements into a single thick piece of glass, with a groove cut in the center to select the portion of the light with the least aberration. This design produces a lens with the superb achromatic and anastigmatic qualities that you usually find only in much more complicated (and expensive) multi-element lenses. The Bausch & Lomb illuminated Coddington magnifier uses a special translucent ring to light up the subject from all sides, eliminating glare spots and shadows. How good is it? See for yourself on my site! (clickable link)

That looks very nice Richard,

I have been trying to decide what loupe to buy, I think you found me a winner.

Thanks for the heads up.

I saw this at the Raleigh Show.... Richard had just decided to order some for resale...

This is without a doubt one of the finest loupe/magnifiers you will ever find...

I told Richard I wanted one immediately upon trying it....

Why didn't he tell me first that they came in??? :crybaby: :ltcapd:

My magnifier arrived yesterday compliments of Richard and Barbara. It does all that Richard says. A great tool to examine the finer details of your pens.

I am not sure what I am looking at in the two pictures?

The r/h nib appears less 'schmutzy' to my uneducated eye

You've done better than I. I have yet to figure out what is being reffered to as schmutz.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
