Lamy Safari

My father-in-law just gave me a bunch of old pens of which one was a Lamy Safari he purchased back in the 80's.

Normally I do not consider steel nibbed pens but wow, what a great writer it is. It needed a good clean as the whole nib was encrusted but a few minutes work and it was ready to go. Brilliant.

Also got a Parker Skater (cheapo schoolpen) which looks similar to a 45. Again a great writer with a nice smooth broad nib. It was in fact my wife's which she used at school 30yrs ago.

The find of the bunch though was a Stylomine 303 which he bought in Paris in 1952.

It has an unsusuall concertinered sac and is a button filler. Very nice a hard to find in NZ.

To top it off there was a Conway Stewart 759 in Blue Moire which my mother-in-law used at school.

My father-in-law said "here is a box of junk, not sure if any are any good".

So I'm very :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D and on :)9

I "gave" my son a Lamy Safari "clear" model.

It has a great steel nib, as you have said.

Sometimes I do "borrow" it while he does homework.

I am trying to teach him penmanship ever since he was "taught" cursive :o

Congratulations on the very nice bunch of pens, Gary.

If the 80's Safari is anything like the new ones, it might never wear out! Mine have performed flawlessly.

I wonder if the older Safaris were available in different colors from today?

Hi Bill,

They look identical and this one performs perfectly.

Congrats! Safari is a great pen - one of the best FP deals out there today IMHO.

I second all the Safari's opinions, thumbs up!

I have an Al-Star that I bought on Ebay, and to be honest I'm disappointed. It skips on the downstroke. I have flushed it out with some mild soap water, and it got a lot better, but still skips a little. For all you Lamy fans: is this a typical teething problem with this pen or have a got a dud? I wrote to Lamy on their website customer service form (about where to send the pen, etc.), and they never wrote me back, which also doesn't inspire confidence...hmm

Hi,

It is most definitely an abnormal pen.

Just PM me, and I will give you their address. (Or mine, since I can fix it--and try one out too in the process)

To be precise, their address is just a Zip code and city with their name.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
