Hero 616 sack problem

Augustine

Recommended Posts

I got my new Hero pens today that I ordered (actually yesterday now that it is past midnight here). I'm using the Hero 330 and it works great. However my Hero 616 has a problem.

I filled the Hero 616 with ink & after two words written on paper I had a very large blob of ink, followed by another & another. All the ink just poured out. I opened the pen up and it looks like the sack is not completely glued down, so air is getting into the sack. There is a portion, maybe 3 mm or so, that isn't glued on correctly (Sorry, I don't know all the correct terms yet).

My question is, what do I glue the sack down with?

Any help would be appreciated. These Hero pens look just like what I'm looking for in my work environment.

Pull the sac off, clean the nipple and sac of any ink, dry it, apply a thin layer of shellac to the nipple, slide the sac back on, wait 20 min or so, you're all fixed up.

Bull's Eye Shellac is available at nearly any hardware store. You will need a small brush to apply it. Do not dip the nipple into the shellac, it will get inside the collector and give you fits.

This was a cheap online purchase, I don't want to bother with paying shipping back, or even spending gas money to get to the post office. This seems like a good excuse to try a simple repair so I think I'll try to fix it rather than send it back. Maybe after this I'll be willing to try & find some old pens that needs a good cleaning and resacking.

I'll try the Shellac next time I'm out near a place to purchase it.

Thanks,

Augustine

You may wish to check the hood as well - I bought a jumbo 616 that leaked from the hood/section seam from the start. Turns out there was no shellac or sealant of any sort there. Once I added a thin line of shellac to the threads, all was well, and has continued to be for almost a year now.

This is a great opportunity to try a simple repair or two, as you say, and if it gives you confidence to tackle some vintage pens, so much the better. Good luck!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
