Cleaning a Hero aerometric / pump filler

Recommended Posts

I've got a Hero 100 and 616 (a pack of 10 pens) recently and wanna try the 616 with different inks.

I've found that after cleaning the tube with water, it's not easy to dry it for another fill.

I'd appreciate if someone can share their experience with me.

Kenneth

Don't believe you'll ever get it dry, dry. OK, I bet some people can. But to get much of the excess water out after you have squeezed a bunch of times, is to carefully wrap a paper towel around the nib area, wrap your hand around the paper towel and nib and carefully shake the pen down... like people use to shake down a thermometer. Do a search, there are better explanations and some place ... Richard Binder's site?, even has pictures.

Another way is to just leave the pen in a cup or glass with some paper towel kind of fluffed, the nib gently down in the paper towel and it will suck out excess, like overnight.

A bit of water left in the pen shouldn't cause any problems or dilute your ink.

If a cell phone gets dropped in water the advice is to dip it in uncooked rice and leave it there for 12 hours. The rice absorbs the moisture. It may be worth trying with a pen although I have to say that I havent tried it!

Thanks Arthur for reminding me about putting it in rice. I remember reading it in the news but have forgotten it. I tried last night and it works great! I don't even have to dip it (as rice is my normal course of meal), I put it nearby and all the water is absorbed!

Thanks again!

I get all the water out, but I disassemble the whole pen. Basically, I take off the hood, wipe down the collector, pull out the feed and shake the pen. Then, I leave it to dry overnight, with a piece of paper over the pen parts to keep dust off. Note that the hood and section have to be dry before you reassemble the pen, or the ink will leak from the collector to your hands. Also be sure not to lose the clutch ring, as the front one just falls off when you take the hood off.

Can you explain a bit more detail in how you dissemble the pen?

Here's a quick step by step:

1. Take off the barrel (twist).

2. Hold the section (the clear part) and twist the hood. If it doesn't go, try twisting the other way. Be careful of cutting your fingers on the little metal bits.

2.a. The front clutch ring will probably come off. Make sure you don't lose it.

3. You should see the white collector (comb-looking thing), the nib and the black feed. Pull out the feed. The breathing tube is attached, so be careful not to snap it.

4. Tap, squeeze, flick, beg and cry as much water out of the inside of the sac as you can.

5. Wipe down the collector and put everything into a safe place to dry out. Place a piece of paper over the pen parts so they don't get covered in dust.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
