Hi folks. I have inked my Carene using the converter that shipped with it and twice when I open the barrel to fill it again ink has leaked outside the converter and its a bit of a mess. Any ideas what could be going wrong? I am using the Aurora Black in my pen right now. I believe it also happened with the Pelikan black, but I can't be sure on that one. Thanks.

I've never had a problem; I've always used the Waterman converters.

I've never had a problem; I've always used the Waterman converters.

I just filled my pen again and noticed some ink around the place where the transparent plastic meets the metal and it is loose. I can push on it a little widening the gap and ink will seep out. I will just get a new converter and see what happens.

That section labeled "notched tube" doesn't move-

doesn't turn, and I can't get the second ring to turn

because it can only go on over the notch.

 

I can tell you the threads feel sticky ... like old grease.

 

I wonder why the difference between the two... the green shimmer

"ring two" moved freely.

The black one is able to be fixed now. (I just have to have the patience to do it)

 

Couldn't figure out why I could move one ring on one pen and

not the other.

 

Had to have something to do with that notch and the ring

going over it.

 

Sure did.

 

Popped the "ring two" off, turned it over, and put it back

on and problem solved! The little piece of metal inside goes

over the notch and the ring is able to still turn.

What a pain this was! Your post (all your posts) were a big help. My first Carene arrived properly constructed so I thought this one could have been mis-threaded. Glad I don't have to ship it off somewhere. Now if I can just get it to stop puking ink when I take the cap off...

If I may add to this old thread.

 

1. Notched Tube - This part is bonded into the grip (black plastic part). Only heat will soften the adhesive to allow it to be unscrewed. This is only required IF the feed and nib assembly are required to be removed from the grip. It should not and does not need to be removed otherwise.

2. Ring Two - This part does not turn, it is designed to move forwards or backward to, in effect, change the pitch position of the outer thread. Changing the pitch position allows the barrel to rotate more or less thus allowing the assembler (or user) to align the tassie with the nib.

3. Ring One - This part may have a retaining compound on its thread. It is not an adhesive. Some I have found to be very stiff to move others free to move. Luck of the draw. This part screws or unscrews (1/4 turn each time) to allow Ring Two to float forwards or backwards. Small (1/4 turn) movements are required between assembling the barrel to check tassie/nib alignment. When I have re-worked sections, on re-assembly I put nothing on the thread just leave it clean.

 

Now bemon to your leaking pen. This problem has been reported on FPN many times.

 

Let me ask before going further,

 

1. Does it leak when using both cartridge and converter.

2. What make of both are you using.

I know this is a really old post, but it came in very handy for me. I bought a used Carene and noticed the misalignment. I flipped over Ring 2, experimented a little, and finally got it aligned.

Proud resident of the least visited state in the nation!

I too just read this old thread and "fixed" my 11 year old Carene to the proper alignment. A belated thanks to all.

Taking the cake. I just read this and fixed an offset finial on a Carene I’ve owned for nearly two decades, some 15 years after @Maine Vintner and seven years after @Left FPN wrote their posts. I had considered the issue before but mistakenly thought that the ‘top ring’ was part of the threaded bit, while it in fact just retains the barrel-on-threads.  Many thanks!

I have a Carene Deluxe with a snap-on cap. I think I acquired it sometime in the late 1990s. When did they make the switch to screw-on cap? The nib on mine is a fine and very stiff, but good for correcting papers.

I think my post may not have been clear. The cap is still a snap-on, as it is on the latest carenes AFAIK. With the “ threaded bit” I mean the threads by which the barrel screws onto the section.

No, the "mea culpa" is on me. Nothing lacking in your post. I should have gone back and reviewed all of the thread, including the diagram. I get it now.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
