I'm a Canadian expat in Seoul, South Korea where I've been living for nearly seven years.

I've been using FPs almost exclusively for about 14 years (with a two year flirtation with Pilot Hi-Tec-C gel pens about six years ago - my planner paper coudn't deal with FP ink), but I'm not terribly knowledgeable on the subject and wouldn't call myself a collector.

I started out with a Roting Art pen with a F lettering nib, and was soon given my first _real_ FP, a Waterman Laureat F, which I used daily until the aforementioned gel pen indiscretion. Pelikan Blue-black and Brilliant Brown were my colours of choice.

In the middle of the gel pen period, I was given another Waterman, a Hemisphere F, that rekindled my interest in FPs. I ditched the expensive planner, switched back to FPs, and haven't looked back.

I've only got a few pens, and I prefer simple, clean lines with a focus on utility. I still use the Watermans with secondary colours (red and green) but my main writer for the past year has been a Namiki Vanishing Point F with Noodlers Legal Lapis. I just received a Lamy 2000 EF. I'm adjusting to the very wet line it lays down, but it is a very cool pen.

Lately I've been experimenting with a 3x5 index card style planner (google Hipster PDA :P ), so I've been on the hunt for a small, pocketsized, durable knockaround FP to go with it. So far I've turned up the Sailor M81, the A.G. Spalding Bros. Mini Aluminum, and the Speeno: all fun little pens.

I'm considering one more FP purchase simply because I love the F nib on that little Sailor. Perhaps a Sailor 1911 or a Professional Gear. I'm not sure, and it'll take me a while to decide. Any comments?

Hmm... what else? Currently in my Ink Box:

Bottled -

Noodlers: Legal Lapis, Standard Green, Tiananmen, Eternal Brown

Herbin: Cacao du Bresil

Cartridges -

Herbin: Ambre de Birmanie, Poussiere de Lune, Gris Nuages

Private Reserve: Sherwood Green, Copper Burst

Sailor: Blue-black, Red

Namiki: Blue-black

Well, that's enough rambling for now!

Ryan.

Welcome Ryan to the Fountain Pen Nuthouse! :D

I am curious, how common are fountain pens in South Korean? Is it easy to find various kinds of bottled ink there?

Happy New Year!! :)

Sincerely yours,

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

@Mannenhitsu: regarding FPs in Korea, most of the usual big name suspects have counters in the big chain bookstores around Seoul, but prices are about double what average North American prices seem to be.

As far as ink goes, just brand inks at brand counters with a few colours.

Actually, there is a line of Pilot inks available at every hole-in-the-wall stationer that I suspect has very little to do with Pilot/Namiki, as I've never seen it sold or advertised anywhere else and it's made here in Korea by the Pilot Chemical Company.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
