True untipped Italic nibs?

What pens came with true untipped italic nibs, ala Osmiroid? Are these "better" than tipped nibs?

Pelikan had some Italic nibs. I thought they were better than Osmiroid. Better than just about anything else. Rotring had some really good ones, almost on a par with Pelikan. Cartridge refills hurt my rating of them. Sheaffer has Italic nibs, not better than Osmiroid, IMHO. Parker had some, better than Sheaffer, probably not as good as Osmroid for wetness but probably longer lasting. There are plenty of others but I can't comment on their relative "better-ness"

I am just speculating on tipped vs untipped "better-ness" but I imagine that tipped would last longer but not produce as good ( read crisp sharp lines) results in calligraphy lettering.

Platignum made a set of screw-in italic nibs that fit their Silverline pens. These appear to be untipped. There are six of them: fine, medium, broad, B2, B3, and B4. These are more crisp than the equivalent Sheaffer nibs and therefore the sweet spots are a lot smaller. I have never worn one out, so I cannot attest to their longevity.

I don't know what you mean by "better". The untipped nib is probably softer than the tipped one, so it would wear faster but be more easily re-ground.

My experience is similar to ANM's. My Pelikan "Skript" pen has the smoothest nib, probably the most enjoyable cursive italic feel, although perhaps not quite as crisp as some others. Osmiroid nibs that fit into Esterbrook bodies are pretty good, but the metal is soft, so you may need to do periodic adjustments. Lamy Joy/Safari calligraphy nibs are OK and pretty durable. (BTW, I have a Lamy "Joy" pen I could sell you.) The Platignum pen I have has a very, very dry flow. I don't know if it's representative of that brand.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

The calligraphy pens by the Manuscript company are also untipped, and are very similar to the old Osmiroid nibs.

In vintage pens, Esterbrook had a number of untipped italic nibs. I do not think I saw Rotring's "Art Pen" listed above. But I agree that Pelikan's "Script" series is one of the best I have found.

I am also unsure what you mean by "better." Untipped italic nibs give a crisp line, frequently crisper than a tipped nib. But, tipped nibs are more duarable. I seems like a trade off. What features do you want in your italic nibs?

Betterness means crispness for me.

I think the Lamy Italics are tipped

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
